Solved: Microphone Not Working | How to Allow Microphone Access for Specific Websites

If you're trying to use the voice typing feature (Speech-to-Text) on our virtual keyboard for 75+ languages and find that your microphone isn't responding, you're not alone! This is a common issue related to browser security settings, and it's usually easy to fix.

Why Does This Happen?

Modern web browsers emphasize user privacy and security, especially with features like microphone access, which can record your voice. To safeguard users, browsers enforce strict protocols such as HTTPS and instance of microphone blocking even for once for a specific website.

Prior Permission Denial: If you've visited a site before and mistakenly clicked "Block" when asked for microphone access, your browser will remember this choice. It won’t prompt you again unless you manually adjust the setting.

How to Resolve Microphone Access Issues

Before troubleshooting, please ensure that the website address in your browser's URL bar begins with https://. If it doesn't, voice typing will not work.

Once you've confirmed HTTPS, follow the steps for your specific browser:

For Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based Browsers)

These browsers share a similar settings interface for permissions.

1. Open Browser Settings:

   • Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top-right corner of the browser window.

   • Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.

2. Navigate to Privacy and Security:

   • In the left sidebar, click on "Privacy and security".

   • Then, click on "Site Settings" (Chrome) or "Site permissions" (Edge).

3. Find Microphone Settings:

   • Scroll down and click on "Microphone".

4. Manage Site Permissions:

   • Look under "Block" (or "Not allowed to use your microphone").

   • If you see dozro.com (or the specific domain of the virtual keyboard) listed there, click the trash can icon next to it to remove the block.

   • Alternatively, select the arrow to open permissions page, look for “Microphone” and select “Allow” option. It will solve the microphone issue.

   • Alternatively, you can change the default behavior at the top to "Sites can ask to use your microphone" (Chrome) or "Ask (recommended)" (Edge).

5. Refresh the Page:

   • Go back to the virtual keyboard page and refresh it.

   • Now, click the microphone button on the keyboard. Your browser should prompt you for permission. Select "Allow".

For Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Browser Settings:

   • Click the three horizontal lines (☰) (the "hamburger" menu) in the top-right corner of the browser window.

   • Select "Settings" (or "Options" on some versions).

2. Navigate to Privacy & Security:

   • In the left sidebar, click on "Privacy & Security".

3. Find Microphone Permissions:

   • Scroll down to the "Permissions" section.

   • Find "Microphone" and click the "Settings..." button next to it.

4. Manage Site Exceptions:

   • A list of websites that have requested microphone access will appear.

   • If you see dozro.squarespace.com (or the specific domain) listed with a "Block" status, select it and click "Remove Website".

   • Ensure that "Block new requests asking to access your microphone" is unchecked if you want to be prompted again.

5. Refresh the Page:

   • Go back to the virtual keyboard page and refresh it.

   • Now, click the microphone button on the keyboard. Firefox should display a prompt at the top-left asking for microphone access. Select "Allow".
