User's Guide to the Finnish Typing Speed Test (Käyttöopas Suomen Kielen Kirjoitusnopeustestiin)
Developing fast and accurate typing (nopea ja tarkka kirjoittaminen) skills can significantly boost your productivity, improve communication, and save you valuable time every day. Our free Finnish typing test (Ilmainen Kirjoitusharjoitus Suomi/kirjoitusharjoitus) is a simple yet powerful tool designed to help you measure your current skill level and provide consistent typing practice (näppäimistöharjoitus) to help you improve.
How to Effectively Use the Test (Kuinka Käyttää Testiä Tehokkaasti)
Getting started is easy. The interface is designed to be clean and intuitive, allowing you to jump right into your typing practice session.
Step 1: Customize Your Session (Mukauta Istuntoasi)
Before you begin, you can tailor the test to your preferences. Look for the option buttons located just above the main text area.
Test Mode (Testitila): You can choose between Paragraph mode (Kappaletila) to type a full block of text, simulating real-world writing, or Words mode (Sanatila) to practice with a sequence of common Finnish words.
Test Duration (Testin Kesto): Select your desired test length. You can choose a quick 30-second sprint, a standard 60-second test, or a longer 120-second session for endurance.
Step 2: Start the Test (Aloita Testi)
Once you've selected your options, click the green "Start Test" button. The typing area below the sample text will immediately activate, and a cursor will indicate where you should begin.
Step 3: Begin Typing (Aloita Kirjoittaminen)
As you type, the test provides you with live feedback:
Correct characters will be highlighted in green.
Incorrect characters will be highlighted in red, with a cross mark (x) above them.
If you make a mistake, you don't need to hit backspace. The test is designed to measure your forward-typing flow. Simply type the correct character to proceed. The timer in the top right will show your remaining time.
Step 4: View Your Results (Katso Tuloksesi)
The test automatically ends when the timer runs out or if you successfully type the entire text provided. Your performance report will instantly appear below the test area. If you want to abandon a test mid-way, you can click the "Restart Test" button or select a new option to start a fresh session.
Understanding Your Performance Metrics (Ymmärrä Suorituskykymittarisi)
To improve your typing skills, it's important to understand the feedback you receive. Our test provides key metrics to help you track your progress.
SPM (WPM - Sanaa Minuutissa): This is your net typing speed, the most important metric for job applications and overall proficiency. It is calculated by taking your total speed and subtracting a penalty for any errors made, giving you a true measure of your useful and productive typing speed. For standardization, one "word" is counted as five characters.
MPM (CPM - Merkkiä Minuutissa): This is your gross typing speed. It measures the total number of characters you type per minute, including any mistakes. This metric provides a detailed look at your raw keystroke speed.
Accuracy (Tarkkuus): This is a simple percentage that shows how many characters you typed correctly versus the total number of characters you typed. Aiming for an accuracy of 95% or higher is a great goal.
Errors (Virheet): This is a straightforward count of every incorrect key you pressed during the test.
Average and Fast Typing Speed in Finnish (Keskimääräinen ja nopea kirjoitusnopeus suomeksi)
Due to the structure of the Finnish language, which features many long, agglutinative words, Characters Per Minute (CPM) is often seen as a more precise metric than Words Per Minute (WPM).
Average Speed: For a native Finnish speaker, the average typing speed is similar to that of English typists, falling in the range of 35-50 WPM. However, due to longer words, the equivalent CPM is often higher than the standard WPM x 5 calculation, typically ranging from 200-280 CPM.
Fast Speed: A speed of 60-75 WPM is considered fast for a casual typist. In professional roles, a fast typist would be expected to achieve 80+ WPM. The corresponding CPM for fast typists is generally 300 CPM and above.
3. Hiring Criteria: WPM vs. CPM
In Finland, while WPM (sanaa minuutissa) is understood, professional and government organizations overwhelmingly prefer and use Characters Per Minute (CPM)—or merkkiä minuutissa (characters per minute)—as the primary hiring criterion.
The reason is simple: Finnish words can be extremely long. For example, "juoksentelisinkohan" ("I wonder if I should run around aimlessly") is a single word. Using WPM would be highly misleading, as typing five long Finnish words is much more difficult than typing five short English words. CPM provides a standardized and language-agnostic measure of raw speed and accuracy.
4. Minimum Typing Speed (Minimikirjoitusnopeusvaatimus suomeksi)
The minimum speed required depends heavily on the job. For general office work, a basic proficiency is assumed, but for roles centered on transcription, data entry, or minute-taking, specific requirements are common.
While many modern job ads use vague terms like "good IT skills" or "fast typing ability," specific CPM requirements are still standard in more demanding administrative roles.
Example Requirement: In the Finnish public sector, especially for roles like a minute-taker or transcriptionist (pöytäkirjanpitäjä or tekstinkäsittelijä), a common benchmark has historically been the completion of a standardized typing test. A past requirement for an administrative assistant position at a Finnish university specified a minimum acceptable speed of 250 CPM with high accuracy. This is a realistic benchmark for a role where typing is a significant part of the daily duties.
Therefore, our format of WPM, and CPM is perfectly suitable for a Finnish typing test. It aligns with international standards and provides the necessary metrics for users to gauge their performance for both personal improvement and professional requirements.
