Understanding Your Performance Metrics (Uw Prestatiemetrieken Begrijpen)
To improve your typing skills, it's important to understand the feedback you receive. Our test provides key metrics to help you track your progress.
WPM (Woorden Per Minuut - Words Per Minute): This is your net typing speed, the most important metric for job applications and overall proficiency. It is calculated by taking your total speed and subtracting a penalty for any errors made, giving you a true measure of your useful and productive typing speed. For standardization, one "word" is counted as five characters.
APM (Aanslagen Per Minuut - Characters Per Minute): This is your gross typing speed. It measures the total number of characters you type per minute, including any mistakes. This metric provides a detailed look at your raw keystroke speed.
Accuracy (Nauwkeurigheid): This is a simple percentage that shows how many characters you typed correctly versus the total number of characters you typed. Aiming for an accuracy of 95% or higher is a great goal.
Errors (Fouten): This is a straightforward count of every incorrect key you pressed during the test.
Average and Fast Typing Speed in Dutch (Gemiddelde en snelle typesnelheid in het Nederlands)
The Dutch language (Nederlands
) uses the Latin alphabet, and the standard keyboard layout is QWERTY. Professional typing speed standards are well-established and high, comparable to those in Germany and other major European economies.
Average User: 40 - 55 WPM (approximately 200 - 275 CPM). This is a standard speed for a typical computer user proficient in daily office tasks.
Proficient / Professional: 55 - 70 WPM (approximately 275 - 350 CPM). This speed is considered highly efficient and is the general expectation for most administrative, secretarial (
secretaresse
), and office jobs.Fast / Advanced: 70+ WPM (approximately 350+ CPM). This is a high-performance speed, required for specialized roles such as transcriptionists, medical secretaries, and executive assistants.
Hiring Criteria: Characters Per Minute (CPM) is a Key Standard
In the Netherlands and Belgium, the most common and precise metric used in job requirements for administrative roles is Characters Per Minute (CPM), which is referred to as aanslagen per minuut
(APM).
Metric Used: While WPM (
woorden per minuut
) is understood, job advertisements for roles where typing is a core skill will almost always specify a required speed inaanslagen per minuut
.Hiring Focus: For many administrative roles, a fast and accurate typing speed (
hoge typesnelheid
ortypevaardigheid
) is a critical, testable skill.
Minimum Typing Speed Requirement (Minimale typesnelheidseis in het Nederlands)
A specific minimum speed in CPM/APM is a very common requirement for secretarial and data entry positions.
Minimum Speed Required: For most secretarial and administrative roles, a minimum speed of 200-250 APM (CPM) is a standard benchmark.
Requirement Example: A recent job advertisement for an
Administratief Medewerker
(Administrative Assistant) with a major logistics company in Rotterdam listed the following key requirement:"Een uitstekende typevaardigheid is vereist (minimaal 250 aanslagen per minuut). Dit zal worden getest." Translation: "An excellent typing skill is required (minimum of 250 characters per minute). This will be tested."
This clearly shows that CPM/APM is a critical hiring metric, making it essential for any practical typing test for this market.
Suitability of WPM and CPM Formats
Our format of providing both WPM and CPM is ideal for a Dutch typing test.
CPM (Characters Per Minute): This is the essential and primary metric (
Aanslagen/min
). Users need this score to know if they meet the specific requirements listed in local job ads.WPM (Words Per Minute): This is a valuable secondary metric (
Woorden/min
). It allows users to compare their skills against international standards and provides a familiar benchmark for general performance.
