How to Effectively Use the Test (Hvordan bruke testen effektivt)
Getting started is easy. The interface is designed to be clean and intuitive, allowing you to jump right into your typing practice session.
Step 1: Customize Your Session (Trinn 1: Tilpass økten din)
Before you begin, you can tailor the test to your preferences. Look for the option buttons located just above the main text area.
Test Mode (Testmodus): You can choose between Paragraph mode (Avsnittsmodus) to type a full block of text, simulating real-world writing, or Words mode (Ordsmodus) to practice with a sequence of common Norwegian words.
Test Duration (Testvarighet): Select your desired test length. You can choose a quick 30-second sprint, a standard 60-second test, or a longer 120-second session for endurance.
Step 2: Start the Test (Trinn 2: Start testen)
Once you've selected your options, click the green "Start Test" button. The typing area below the sample text will immediately activate, and a cursor will indicate where you should begin.
Step 3: Begin Typing (Trinn 3: Begynn å skrive)
As you type, the test provides you with live feedback:
Correct characters will be highlighted in green.
Incorrect characters will be highlighted in red, with a cross mark (x) above them.
If you make a mistake, you don't need to hit backspace. The test is designed to measure your forward-typing flow. Simply type the correct character to proceed. The timer in the top right will show your remaining time.
Step 4: View Your Results (Trinn 4: Se resultatene dine)
The test automatically ends when the timer runs out or if you successfully type the entire text provided. Your performance report will instantly appear below the test area. If you want to abandon a test mid-way, you can click the "Restart Test" button or select a new option to start a fresh session.
Understanding Your Performance Metrics (Forstå dine ytelsesmålinger)
To improve your typing skills, it's important to understand the feedback you receive. Our test provides key metrics to help you track your progress.
OIM (WPM - Ord i minuttet): This is your net typing speed, the most important metric for job applications and overall proficiency. It is calculated by taking your total speed and subtracting a penalty for any errors made, giving you a true measure of your useful and productive typing speed. For standardization, one "word" is counted as five characters.
TIM (CPM - Tegn i minuttet): This is your gross typing speed. It measures the total number of characters you type per minute, including any mistakes. This metric provides a detailed look at your raw keystroke speed.
Accuracy (Nøyaktighet): This is a simple percentage that shows how many characters you typed correctly versus the total number of characters you typed. Aiming for an accuracy of 95% or higher is a great goal.
Errors (Feil): This is a straightforward count of every incorrect key you pressed during the test.
Average and Fast Typing Speed in Bokmål Norwegian (Gjennomsnittlig og rask skrivehastighet på bokmål norsk)
Norwegian (Norsk Bokmål
) uses the Latin alphabet with three additional vowels (Æ, Ø, Å). The standard keyboard is QWERTY, making typing very efficient. Professional standards are high, in line with other Nordic countries.
Average User: 40 - 55 WPM (approximately 200 - 275 CPM). This is a standard speed for a typical computer user in Norway proficient in daily office tasks.
Proficient / Professional: 55 - 70 WPM (approximately 275 - 350 CPM). This speed is considered highly efficient and is the general expectation for most administrative, secretarial (
sekretær
), and office jobs.Fast / Advanced: 70+ WPM (approximately 350+ CPM). This is a high-performance speed, required for specialized roles like transcriptionists, journalists, and executive assistants.
Hiring Criteria: Words Per Minute (WPM) is the Standard
In Norway, the universal standard for measuring typing speed in a professional context is Words Per Minute (WPM), referred to as Ord i Minuttet
(OIM).
Metric Used: Job advertisements from both the private sector and the Norwegian public sector (
offentlig sektor
) that specify a typing speed use WPM. CPM (tegn per minutt
) is a technical measure but not the primary hiring metric.Hiring Focus: For many administrative roles, fast and accurate typing is a core competency. Job advertisements often list requirements like
gode skriveferdigheter
(good writing skills) orgode datakunnskaper
(good computer skills), which implies a high typing speed.
Minimum Speed Requirement & Real-World Example (Minimumskrav til skrivehastighet på bokmål norsk)
A specific minimum speed is a common requirement for many administrative and secretarial positions.
Minimum Speed Required: For most secretarial and administrative roles, a minimum speed of 50-60 WPM is a standard benchmark.
Requirement Example: A recent job advertisement for an
Administrasjonskonsulent
(Administrative Consultant) with a government agency in Oslo listed the following key requirement:"Det kreves en skrivehastighet på minst 60 ord i minuttet. En praktisk test vil bli gjennomført." Translation: "A typing speed of at least 60 words per minute is required. A practical test will be conducted."
This clearly shows that WPM is the official metric and that a specific, high-level speed is a direct criterion for many professional roles in Norway.
Suitability of WPM and CPM Formats
Our format of providing both WPM and CPM is ideal for a Norwegian (Bokmål) typing test.
WPM (Words Per Minute): This is the essential and primary metric. It directly corresponds to the official hiring standard in Norway and is the number users need to know for job applications.
CPM (Characters Per Minute): This is a valuable secondary metric. It provides users with a more detailed analysis of their raw speed, which is very useful for practice and for improving technique with the special characters Æ, Ø, and Å.
Why We Created Separate Typing Tests for Bokmål vs. Nynorsk
We created two separate typing tests (Tastaturtester): one for the Bokmål and one for Nynorsk.
A single test will not suffice. Although they are mutually intelligible, the differences are significant enough to impact a user's natural typing flow, making a single test unfair and inaccurate.
Usage Statistics
Bokmål (Riksmål): This is the dominant written form, used by approximately 85-90% of the Norway population. It is the standard for most newspapers, books, and urban areas.
Nynorsk (Landsmål): This form is used by approximately 10-15% of the population, primarily in Western Norway and rural areas. It is an official language and is required in government communications and schools in those regions.
Key Differences Making Separate Tests Necessary:
A text written in one variant feels distinctly "foreign" to a primary user of the other, which would unfairly impact their typing speed.
Vocabulary: Many common words are different.
I:
jeg
(Bokmål) vs.eg
(Nynorsk)Not:
ikke
(Bokmål) vs.ikkje
(Nynorsk)Book:
boken
(Bokmål) vs.boka
(Nynorsk)
Grammar and Spelling: There are consistent differences in verb conjugations, noun endings, and the use of diphthongs.
A user accustomed to typing
ikke
would hesitate and make errors when required to typeikkje
.
