How to Effectively Use the Test (Korleis bruke testen effektivt)
Getting started is easy. The interface is designed to be clean and intuitive, allowing you to jump right into your typing practice session.
Step 1: Customize Your Session (Tilpass økta di)
Before you begin, you can tailor the test to your preferences. Look for the option buttons located just above the main text area.
Test Mode (Testmodus): You can choose between Paragraph mode (Avsnittsmodus) to type a full block of text, simulating real-world writing, or Words mode (Ordsmodus) to practice with a sequence of common Nynorsk words.
Test Duration (Testvarigheit): Select your desired test length. You can choose a quick 30-second sprint, a standard 60-second test, or a longer 120-second session for endurance.
Step 2: Start the Test (Start testen)
Once you've selected your options, click the green "Start Test" button. The typing area below the sample text will immediately activate, and a cursor will indicate where you should begin.
Step 3: Begin Typing (Byrja å skrive)
As you type, the test provides you with live feedback:
Correct characters will be highlighted in green.
Incorrect characters will be highlighted in red, with a cross mark (x) above them.
If you make a mistake, you don't need to hit backspace. The test is designed to measure your forward-typing flow. Simply type the correct character to proceed. The timer in the top right will show your remaining time.
Step 4: View Your Results (Sjå resultata dine)
The test automatically ends when the timer runs out or if you successfully type the entire text provided. Your performance report will instantly appear below the test area. If you want to abandon a test mid-way, you can click the "Restart Test" button or select a new option to start a fresh session.
Understanding Your Performance Metrics (Forstå ytingseiningane dine)
To improve typing speed (forbetre skrivefart), you need to understand the feedback. Our test provides key metrics to help you track your progress.
Gross WPM (Brutto OPM - Ord Per Minutt): This is your raw typing speed. It measures the total amount of text you typed, converted into "words" (where one word = 5 characters), and calculates how many you would type in a minute at that rate. It does not account for errors.
Net WPM (Netto OPM - Ord Per Minutt): This is your "real" or "accurate" typing speed, and it's the most important metric for most users. Net WPM takes your raw speed and subtracts any errors you made, giving you a true measure of your useful and productive typing speed.
CPM (TPM - Teikn Per Minutt): This stands for Characters Per Minute. It measures the total number of characters you type per minute, providing a more detailed look at your raw keystroke speed.
Accuracy (Nøyaktigheit): This is a simple percentage that shows how many characters you typed correctly versus the total number of characters you typed. Aiming for a typing accuracy (skrivenøyaktigheit) of 95% or higher is a great goal for an effective norsk skriveprøve (Norwegian Typing Test).
Errors (Feil): This is a straightforward count of every incorrect key you pressed during the test.
Why We Created Separate Typing Tests for Bokmål vs. Nynorsk
We created two separate typing tests (Tastaturtester): one for Bokmål and one for this Nynorsk.
A single test will not suffice. Although they are mutually intelligible, the differences are significant enough to impact a user's natural typing flow, making a single test unfair and inaccurate.
Usage Statistics
Bokmål (Riksmål): This is the dominant written form, used by approximately 85-90% of the Norway population. It is the standard for most newspapers, books, and urban areas.
Nynorsk (Landsmål): This form is used by approximately 10-15% of the population, primarily in Western Norway and rural areas. It is an official language and is required in government communications and schools in those regions.
Key Differences Making Separate Tests Necessary:
A text written in one variant feels distinctly "foreign" to a primary user of the other, which would unfairly impact their typing speed.
