How to Use the Keyboard

Typing and Switching Languages

The keyboard defaults to the Tamil 99 layout. Unlike phonetic keyboards, this layout is based on the structure of the Tamil script.

• Vowels (உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள்): These are located on the left side of the keyboard (e.g., the a key types அ).

• Consonants (மெய் எழுத்துக்கள்): These are on the right side (e.g., the k key types க).

• Pulli ( ் ): The f key types the pulli mark, which creates a pure consonant. For example, to type க், you press k followed by f.

• Vowel Signs (உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துக்கள்): To create a consonant-vowel combination, type the consonant first, then the vowel sign. For example, to type கா, you press k (for க) and then a (for the ா sign).

To switch between Tamil and English, click the Eng/தமிழ் button.

Using the Shift Key

The Shift key has a special function in the Tamil 99 layout. It allows you to type the pure consonant form directly, saving a keystroke.

• Normal: k + f = க்

• With Shift: Shift + k = க்

In English mode, Shift works as expected to produce uppercase letters.

• Shift: Clicking the Shift key gives you access to a secondary layer of characters. In English mode, this produces uppercase letters. In Tamil mode, this reveals important vowel signs (matras) and other symbols. The Shift key deactivates after one use.

• Caps Lock: In English mode, click Caps Lock to type continuously in uppercase. The key will light up when active. Click it again to deactivate.

Voice Typing and Other Tools

Voice Typing (Speech-to-Text)

1. Click the Microphone (🎤) button to start voice typing.

2. Your browser may ask for permission to use your microphone. Please click "Allow".

3. The status message will show "Listening..." Start speaking clearly in your selected language.

4. Your spoken words will be converted into text.

• Language Recognition: The speech-to-text engine is configured for specific dialects to improve accuracy.

  • Tamil Mode: Uses language code ta-MY for Malaysian Tamil.

  • English Mode: Uses language code en-US for US English. If this is not supported, it will use en-US as a fallback.

Auto Punctuation

• The Auto Punct. button helps you end sentences quickly. When activated, it will automatically add a period . and a space after you finish speaking with the voice typing feature in either language.

Other Tools

• Translate: Type your text and click the Translate button for an instant translation in a new tab.

• Text Management: Use Undo, Redo, Copy, and Clear All to manage your text efficiently.

• Emoji Keyboard (😀): Click the smiley face to access a full emoji panel for adding expressive characters to your text.

Translate Feature

The virtual keyboard features a handy Translate button that allows you to swiftly translate your typed text.

How it Works:

• Bilingual Text Translation: When the Malaysian Tamil keyboard is active, clicking the “Translate” button will convert text from Malaysian Tamil to English. Conversely, when the English keyboard is active, clicking “Translate” will convert text from English to Malaysian Tamil , using Google Translate.

• Steps:

1. Type or voice-type any text into the main text area.

2. Click or tap the Translate button.

3. If the text area is empty, a temporary message "Type text first!" will appear, and no new tab will open.

4. If there is text in the text area, a new browser tab will automatically open, redirecting you to Google Translate.

5. Your typed text will be pre-filled into Google Translate's input field.

6. Google Translate will automatically detect the source language of your text.

7. The translation will be displayed in the automatically selected target language (English if Tamil 99 keyboard was active, Tamil if English keyboard was active).

Important Note for Mobile Users:

On mobile devices with the Google Translate app, clicking "Translate" might open the installed app instead of the web page, and it may not pre-fill your text. To work around this, click "Copy" first to save your text, then "Translate," and paste it in the app.

Physical Keyboard Synchronization

This virtual keyboard will synchronize with your physical keyboard. If you use the Shift or Caps Lock keys on your physical keyboard, the characters on the virtual keyboard will change accordingly. When you press an English letter on your physical keyboard, it will be converted into a Tamil (India) character when using the Malaysian Tamil virtual keyboard.
