Google Chrome Accessibility Features Settings

You can customize your Chrome browser according to your own needs. I customize the settings as shown below.

  • Live caption. I turn ON the toggle next to this great captioning feature in Chrome. You can consult another article on Dozro website to know how Live Captions help for the deaf and for the English learner. Type ‘Live Caption’ on in search tab on Dozro website.

  • Show a quick highlight on the focused object: I turn ON the toggle next to this option. It creates a border around link, an element or text, making it more visible and helping locate the relevant item on a webpage. It increases focus.

  • Navigate pages with a text cursor: I keep it turned OFF for faster navigation through mouse or down arrow on keyboard. However, if you want to read a webpage with a visible cursor, you can turn it ON here. You can also use the shortcut F7 on your keyboard to turn this caret browsing on or off.

  • Get image descriptions from Google: I keep it OFF to save resources. However, it is helpful feature for people with disabilities especially screen readers and blind. You can also right-click on an image on any webpage and select ‘Get image descriptions from Google’ and then select ‘Always’ or choose ‘Once’ for using it this time only.

  • Ask before closing a window with multiple tabs: I toggle it ON.

Additional Accessibility Features in Chrome

Here are some more Chrome features for accessibility.

  • Page zoom: I keep the zoom level to 100% which is default zoom level in Chrome. However, you can change it according to your requirements by clicking three dots and there through plus and minus buttons.

  • Blind persons and screen readers can use TalkBack tool on Android phones for eyes-free control of your device.

  • By using ‘Color Enhancer’ extension, you can adjust colors of a webpage as per your comfortability.

  • Use F12 key to open the Developer tools: I turn this option ON. You can access it by clicking three dots and then ‘More tools’ option.

  • You can use keyboard shortcuts and Chrome Actions feature for your improved accessibility.

  • You can add ‘Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader’ from Chrome Web Store.

  • You can also add accessibility extensions in Chrome such as Google Translate, Google Dictionary, Google Input Tools, SwiftRead, and other extensions.

Additionally, you can also explore your computer settings (StartSettingsEase of Access) for helpful settings related to vision and hearing.
