Squarespace Default Font of Template – Change or Not?

Should you change the default font of Squarespace template?

It depends whether you are building a basic site, or you are an advanced user building a professional site.

Suggestions for Beginners

Should You Change the Default Font of Squarespace Template?
  • You should not customize fonts in Squarespace, if you are beginner having little knowledge about the working of fonts.

  • Stick to the default fonts came with your selected template because those Squarespace templates (themes) are designed by professionals who have carefully applied fonts in a template.

  • In case, you are not happy with a font, just go to account dashboard and click ‘CREATE WEBSITE’ for starting free trial with a new template. Each template has some different default fonts. Pick another template with built-in fonts you like.

  • In case you have built a lot of content on your site and now you are determined to replace default font with some other alternative, then I will suggest you should only change font through ‘Font Pack’ option by clicking ‘SWITCH’ button at the top of ‘Fonts’ panel.

  • Because font packs in Squarespace are professionally designed and when you switch to some other font pack, it automatically changes all micro tweaks (such as base size, text size, spacings) according to the selected font pack.

  • A novice should not change fonts under ‘Global Text Styles’ because there is a chance that you end up applying poor font styles on your website. For example, you can mistakenly set line height or letter spacing below the value recommended for that particular font. You may also inadvertently set a wrong base size for website.

  • Please remember that if text on your website is not readable or accessible to persons with disabilities, it will not only create a bad user experience, but it may also hamper your efforts to rank webpages in search engine. Your text on website should comply the WCAG standards for accessibility.

  • Please note that though it is better to finalize your website fonts and show them to the world from the start but you can change fonts on your Squarespace website anytime later after publishing the site.

  • In case of any mistake, you can apply default font settings of template, by clicking ‘Reset Font Packs’ at the bottom of Fonts panel in Squarespace site.

Suggestions for Advanced Font Users

  • If you are advanced user – who knows well about the design aspects and subtleties of a font – you should not change font from ‘Font Packs’ in Squarespace because of limited number of fonts.

  • You should use option under ‘Global Text Styles’ to apply fonts on headings, paragraphs etc. due to availability of huge repository of available web fonts.

  • However, always review after selecting a new font because micro font tweaks will not automatically change to become suitable for the new font. Please refer to my earlier example that how after replacing ‘Poppins’ font with ‘IBM Plex Sans’ font, the weight and other font values did not change.

  • You already know that it is a wise idea to minimize the number of fonts and styles in perspective of fast loading of webpages in user browser.
