In this article, I have listed all the features and functionality available in CyberLink PowerDirector video editing software. I have made tremendous efforts to present the correct and authentic information in this blog post; however, if you notice any error, please help improve it by suggesting edits.

Masking

Masking is often used to make some portions of video (image too) transparent. For example, you can remove the corners of a square photo or video to display or save as a round or more shapes. A mask is also applied to blur or hide the face of a person or the number plate of a car. You can also draw a custom mask around an object to make its surroundings transparent.

You can also hide something specific (a text, or mage) from your video. AI Object Detection tool of PowerDirector can automatically detect an object (and applies mask) in your video and helps you to remove it. Similarly, you can replace the day sky background in your video with other stunning scenes such as starry night sky, Northern Lights, or the sunset view.

The Mask Designer tool in PowerDirector is intuitive with several easy-to-apply mask shapes.

Overlays

Using CyberLink PowerDirector, you can add your own logo image or watermark (PiP layer) on your videos to secure from content thieves or copycats. You can also display another video or image above the main video in the background – simply by moving it in the upper track. You can also use the dedicated PiP Designer in PowerDirector for creating professional overlays.

Keyframing

Keyframing function is used for creating slideshows and motion animations, for example to precisely control the size, time duration, and position of a logo image over the background video. It is also used in custom masking and tracking a motion. CyberLink PowerDirector is really powerful in creating and editing custom keyframes. Many popular video editing software lack this functionality. In my opinion, you should give prime value to the availability of keyframing feature while deciding for a video editing software.

Speed Ramping

Through speed ramping, apply different speeds to a clip – slow down part of clip and then speed up the rest of clip. Because PowerDirector has an effective keyframe feature, therefore it is best for speed ramping function. Along with changing speed of clip, you can also freeze a specific frame (in video) for some duration.

Text Editing Options

PowerDirector provides amazing text formatting options. Write or paste a text (in any language) over the video. Apply any color, size or font style to a text. Beautiful 3D text effects (such as Fire, Lightning) as well as animation presets (such as Pop, Stomp, Bounce) can also be applied to any text in PowerDirector. Various options for text title templates (text in beautiful designs with background elements) can also be applied or customized. Other text editing options including text size, text font, opacity control, text rotation, text border, text shadow etc are also available and very easy to use in PowerDirector.

Motion Tracking

Move a text, video clip or image to follow something, for example, write the name of a running person in a marathon and the name text will follow the movements of that person. As another example, you can hide the number plate of a moving car through motion tracking. Sometimes, automatic motion does not work, so you can manually track the motion through keyframes. CyberLink PowerDirector has AI powered motion tracking functionality – just select the Motion Tracker option from the Tools menu in Timeline .

Reverse a Video

Play a video backwards to amaze the viewers, for example, after reversing a video of person jumping down from top of a roof, it will play as the person jumping up to the roof of a high-rise building (though not possible in real life). In PowerDirector, you can apply “Video in Reverse” effect over a video clip. The website of PowerDirector also provides some examples and easy method for reversing a video.

Exports

It provides fast and one click export of the edited video or MP3 audio. To export a video in PowerDirector, click Produce button and choose the desired export settings. Save exported video in your computer or directly upload to a social platform, including YouTube. Export video in any frame size such as landscape videos for YouTube, or vertical videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels. You can export video or only the audio into various formats including the popular MP4, MP3, and GIF. You can export video as transparent (alpha) background. You can save images (JPG, PNG) from your video in your computer.

Audio Editing

Detach audio from a video and either merge it with another video in the timeline or save only the audio in computer. Remove noise from the audio of your video. PowerDirector is equipped with powerful audio remixing features such as automatic syncing of voice with video, audio visualizer, AI audio stretch (auto increase music duration to fit the length of video), AI speech enhancement, AI wind removal, Auto Ducking (auto fading the music tracks for clarity of narration), vocal transformer (voice changer – convert to voice of a man, woman, child etc), AI echo removal (DeReverb), vocal remover from music, and ‘AI noise detection and removal’ features are also available. You also get hundreds of royalty-free music audios. PowerDirector can automatically detect the silence (part of video having no sound) and lengthy pauses (in your recorded voiceover) in audio and remove them according to your defined settings.

Additionally, CyberLink also offers a standalone AudioDirector 365 which can be purchased separately for exceptional level of audio editing.

Color Editing

PowerDirector is quite powerful in color editing. Easily adjust the values of exposure, vibrancy, brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, sharpness, highlights, and shadow to create an awesome final video. You can auto enhance a video (or image) in PowerDirector with a single click. More color correction options are also available including HDR (to highlight best parts of video), sharpen, white balance, color matching and 3D LUTs (Look-up Tables). Through color picker tool, you can identify the color of any surface in your video (or photo) and apply the same color to a text, font or shape.

CyberLink also has a separate software – ColorDirector – for color editing. It is worth mentioning that if you purchase the Director Suite 365 option from PowerDirector plans, you also get the AudioDirector, PhotoDirector 365, and ColorDirector 365 as a bundle.

Trim, Split, Crop, Rotate, Resize and Merge Clips

PowerDirector has all the basic tweaks required for video editing. You can trim the unwanted portion of a clip (either video or audio) or split (cut) the clip into various parts and save the selected parts in between. Join (merge) several clips. Insert a new clip in between two clips. You can crop a video to remove some portions of it and save the desired portion – for example, your original video is shot from a distance in which a person appears tiny, so you can scale up and crop the side portions in PowerDirector so that the person in the video becomes visible.

Right-Click Easy Menu

For new users, the right-click menu in PowerDirector offers many easy options including Cut, Copy, Paste, Edit Alias, Link/Unlink (Detach Audio from Video), Remove (Delete), Split, Combine, Edit in PiP Designer, Edit Clip Keyframe.

Transitions

To join two completely different clips (example: one clip in black background and other clip in white or yellow background), a transition (for example push, fade, slide, page curl, split, Swap, Shove, Twist, Wave, Glow cross-dissolve) is applied between the clips for smooth shifting in the focus of viewer. Various audio and video transitions are available in PowerDirector. You can select the desired time duration for a transition. You can either apply different transitions at different joints between every two clips or you can repeatedly apply a single transition to all joints in a project. To add transitions in PowerDirector, just click click on the Transition room tab, then select a folder such as Special, Spin, or General.

Animations

Variety of animation effects are available to apply on text, image, or video for stunning motion styles – for example you can display your logo as scrolling from top to the bottom or left to right onto the screen. PowerDirector also provides ready-made animated titles using motion graphics which comes free with a subscription plan.

Please note that if you know keyframing, you can animate elements (text, image, video) in your own custom styles using PowerDirector. You can also cartoonize a video in this video editor software.

Photo Slideshow

Presenting multiple photos into stunning slideshows is very easy, quick and intuitive in in PowerDirector. To create photo slideshow in PowerDirector, just import your images from your PC into the software and choose your favorite style.

AI Features

PowerDirector is equipped with powerful and time saving AI tools, for example AI image generation, background removal. Speech-to-Text tool empowers you to automatically create transcriptions (subtitles and captions) in English, Japanese, Chinese through automated rendering of the audio. It includes AI body effects (charming visual effects which follow the movements of a person), AI motion tracking (for example a cool emoji running or jumping along with you as you move), AI speech-to-text conversion (for example you can generate text from the audio of a video for writing text description of a topic), AI sky replacement, AI Image Generator.

Stabilize Shaky Videos

If your original video is shaky caused by camera movements, you can stabilize it in PowerDirector. To do that, click Fix/Enhance and then select Video Stabilizer tool. Choose the desired correction level.

Video Resizing

Using PowerDirector, you can easily change the frame size of your video to cater to various aspect ratios and screen sizes. It enables you to convert a long-form wide video into a short-form portrait video. You can change the aspect ratio, frame size etc of your video. You can resize a video in PowerDirector either by changing its aspect ratio or keeping the same aspect ratio. For example, you can create a YouTube Short from your landscape YouTube video.

You can also easily scale (pan & zoom) a video clip, for example zoom in to show some tiny object in your video – the rest will be automatically cropped out (removed).

Background Replacement

To remove a green screen, you can use the chroma key in PowerDirector. In fact, you can remove the background having any color - No need of a solid green screen at background while filming. You can remove the original background of your video to replace it with some scenery background. To use chroma key tool in PowerDirector, double click over the clip to open it in the PiP Designer. Here select the Chroma Key tab and then Enable chroma key tool.

Background removal is a great feature – for example, you can show only yourself on screen, after removing the background of your original video. Please note that it is easy to remove a single-color background, but difficult to remove multiple colors in the background – in that case, you have the option of customized removing of background through masking and keyframing.

Screen Recording and Live Streaming

You can record and save what is playing on your computer screen, for example a YouTube video (including voice). Record either full screen or a part of screen. This is a good feature for creating tutorials and live product demo videos. The screen recording feature is not available in many other popular video editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro.

Using the latest Screen Recorder of PowerDirector, you can directly live stream (max 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution) on social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitch by simultaneously recording the computer screen, webcam, and microphone – during the live stream you can remove and replace the background of your webcam. You can also insert your custom logo image over the screen. You copy the Live URL from social platform and enter it into the PowerDirector. You need to login to a platform such as YouTube before live streaming. You also have the option to broadcast only the live stream audio.

CyberLink also offers another standalone product - YouCam - for streaming with some unique features.

Multicam Editing

CyberLink PowerDirector has multi–camera editing capability through its dedicated Multicam Designer tool. This technique enables editing footage from multiple different cameras into a single video simultaneously. You can display multiple video footage side by side and select them back and forth to include in the single video. It can automatically sync the audio and video, or you can manually match them.

It is a useful and time saving feature of the software for editing the videos of a wedding or other events – having shot multiple clips with the same scene. You can sync videos either automatically or manually in PowerDirector. This feature is especially useful for wedding videography, where you shot a scene from multiple cameras at once.

Edit 360 Degree Video

You can edit 360-degree video in PowerDirector. Import the 360° footage in PowerDirector from multiple cameras, edit it by adding effects, and then save it and share it to online platforms.

Video Collage

Similar to a photo collage, you can split the screen in PowerDirector and simultaneously display (and export) multiple videos on a single screen, side by side. To split the screen and put multiple videos in a single screen, select the Plugins menu at the top, then select Video Collage Designer.

Easy Interface

The PowerDirector Interface is quite easy to handle. The workspace (Timeline, Media Library, Rooms, and Preview) can be easily managed.

Editing in PowerDirector timeline is easy and approachable. Just right-click over a clip (video, image, or audio) and you get a lot of easy options for fast editing controls. In this professional software, you have the option to undock the timeline panel.

You can also change the aspect ratio of a project by clicking Edit → Aspect Ratio → here select the preferred aspect ratio such as 4:3, 9:16, or 16:9 – you can also choose any custom aspect ratio of the project. PowerDirector has complete instructions on their website for how to use the software.

For fast editing, you can use various keyboard shortcuts, for example, to cut, copy, save, undo, redo, split, duplicate, adding keyframe.

PowerDirector has built-in integrations with Shutterstock, iStock by Getty Images and Meta Sound Collection and you get huge variety of stock media such as free text titles, ready-made and editable video intro and outro templates, effects, stickers, stock video clips, images, sound effects, and background music files.
