What video editing tasks, you can perform in Filmora Video Editor?

In this article, I have listed all the features and functionality available in Wondershare Filmora video editing software. The information in this resource is regularly updated, counterchecked, and authentic; however, you are welcomed to suggest any edits.

Filmora Features

Wondershare Filmora video editing software works on computer 💻 (Windows, mac), as well on mobile 📱 through its apps for Android and iOS devices (phone, tablet).

Overlays

By using the Filmora video overlay feature, you can add your own logo image or watermark text (PiP layer) on your main video to secure it from content thieves or copycats. You can also display another video over the background main video - you can also mask the upper video (or image) in beautiful shapes such as round or heart shape. Ready-made overlay effects are also available in Filmora – just select Effects from the top and then select ‘Overlay’ option to find various cool overlay effects such as light particles, subscribe button, or beautiful borders around your video.

Masking

Masking is often used to make some portions of video (or image) transparent. For example, you can remove the corners of a square photo or video to display or save as a round or more shapes. A mask is also applied to blur the face of a person or the number plate of a car. You can also manually draw a custom mask around an object to make its surroundings transparent. You can also hide something specific (a text, or image) from your video. The Filmora AI Mask feature is quite impressive and easy to use for replacing background.

Keyframing

Wondershare Filmora Features

Keyframing is used for creating beautiful slideshows and motion animations, for example to control the size, time duration, opacity, rotation, and position of a logo image over the background video. It is also used in custom masking and tracking a movement. In fact, keyframing is used for total control in multiple tools, for example time remapping (also called speed ramping). By applying keyframes to an audio, you can set different volume levels at specific time-stamps of a single audio clip.

In fact, Filmora Keyframing capabilities are as advanced and powerful as found in Filmora Pro (now discontinued) or Adobe Premiere Pro. For example, you can edit the keyframes in Keyframe Panel of Filmora. You can right-click over a keyframe in the right-side panel to find out various options to smoothen the motion animation – for example, Linear, Curve, Freeze, Ease In/Out.

In my opinion, when deciding for a video editing software, give prime importance to the availability of keyframing capability.

Speed Ramping

Apply various speeds to a single clip to make it slow and fast at various durations to capture the attention of viewers. Filmora speed ramping tool is easy to use but effective, for either video or for audio only. Keyframing plays vital role in speed ramping function.

Text Editing Options

Write or paste a text (in any language) over the video. Apply any color, size, or font style to a text. Beautiful 3D text styles can also be applied to any text - an exceptional feature in Filmora. Various options for text titles (text in beautiful designs with background elements) are available. You can also animate the text in your own styles with the help of keyframes. For more, check Dozro article about Filmora text editing.

In fact, Filmora empowers you to create your own text titles and save them as preset for future use. You can apply beautiful WordArt styles to any text. Filmora also offers a nice selection of cloud fonts which you can download and use free – I liked the beautiful Cunia font.

Motion Tracking

Move a text, video clip or image to follow something, for example write the name of a running person in a marathon and the name text will follow the movements of that athlete. As another example, you can hide the number plate of a moving car through motion tracking.

The AI based automatic motion tracking in Filmora is accurate most of the time. But in Adobe Premiere Pro the automatic motion tracking fails most of the time - as evident in our this video tutorial. If automatic motion tracking does not work properly, then you can manually apply keyframes to precisely track the motion of an object.

AI Frame Interpolation

This term of frame interpolation might be intimidating for newbies, but it is a very important function of any video editing software. Therefore, Filmora automatically selects the best option for you. For manual selection, you can choose from Frame Sampling, Frame Blending, and Optical Flow options in Filmora. It is really a useful function – for example, when you speed up or slow down a clip, some frames are removed or added for a fluid and smooth motion in exported footage. I have elaborated it in detail in this article.

Reverse a Video

Play a video backwards to amaze the viewers. For example, in original footage, a person is jumping on ground from a tall building but after reversing the video, the person will jump back onto the building (though not possible in real life). As another scenario, in actual video, smoke is emitting out of a cigarette but after reversing the video, the smoke will go back into the cigarette (quite unrealistic). Learn the easy method to Reverse a Video in Filmora.

Quick Exports

Fast and one click export of the edited video or MP3 audio. Save exported video in your computer, Filmora Cloud, or directly upload to social platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Vimeo. Export video in any frame size (resolution, aspect ratio), such as landscape videos for YouTube, or vertical videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels. You can export video or only the audio into various formats including the popular MP4, MP3, and GIF. Filmora supports the audio export in mono, stereo, and 5.1 Surround Sound channels. Check a popular Dozro article for the Best Export Settings in Filmora.

You can export video as transparent (alpha) background. You can right-click over a clip and export only a single clip without disturbing other clips in the timeline. You can save images (JPG, PNG screenshot) from your video in your computer. You can select a device such as Samsung Galaxy, iPhone, Google Pixel or TV and Filmora automatically apply the best export settings for that device. Along with the popular H.264 encoder, Filmora also supports H.265 or HEVC codec for compressing and exporting videos.

Audio Editing

In Filmora, right-click over a video to detach audio from a video and either merge it with another video in the timeline or save only the audio in computer. After detaching audio, click over it in timeline, and you see a lot of audio editing options in the right side panel such as volume adjustment, Fade In/Out, Pitch, AI Speech Enhancement, Wind/Hiss/Hum Removal. Remove noise from the audio of your video.

Filmora is equipped with audio remixing features such as automatic syncing of voice with video, Audio Visualizer, vocal remover from music, Audio Stretch (increase audio duration to match with video without changing the pitch), and Auto Ducking (automatically lowers the volume of background music and sound effects as dialogue starts) features are also available. You also get hundreds of royalty-free music audios.

Filmora can automatically detect the silence (part of video having no sound) and lengthy pauses (in your recorded voiceover) in audio and remove them according to your defined settings. Filmora enables you to adjust the volume, speed, and pitch of an audio. In Filmora, you can apply speed ramping to only audio through easy-to-apply editable templates.

Color Editing

The pro level Filmora color correction features are easy-to-use but with a professional result. If your beginner, you can automatically enhance the colors of a video (or image) in Filmora through a single click – for that select a video clip (or image) in timeline, click ‘Auto Enhance’ button in Basic tab of the Video panel on the right side. If you are pro video editor, Filmora offers advanced color controls for you. Change color values of a video such as saturation, tint, temperature. You can also apply custom light values such as exposure, brightness, contrast, shadow. More color editing options are also available including HDR, sharpen, white balance, color matching, split toning, fisheye correction, and 3D LUTs. Through color picker tool, you can identify the color of any surface in your video (or photo) and apply the same color to a text, font or shape.

Proxy Video Editing

It is a useful technique, used by many advanced video editing software. Filmora creates low-res intermediary miniature copies of your original HD or 4K footage, for smooth playback in timeline. It minimizes the chance of software crash. Proxy video editing is especially helpful if your computer has modest specs. It is noteworthy that proxy files are created for temporary use in timeline and have no effect on the final quality of the exported video.

To optionally create a proxy file in Filmora, click File → Preferences → Performance.

Interface Layout

You can choose from various custom interface layout options in Filmora. For example if you select “Short Video” layout, Filmora will create a vertical panel for the player (viewer) screen on the right side – easy for creating YouTube Shorts or Facebook Reels. You can change the size of panels in Filmora – for example, you can increase the viewer panel when needed.

Trim, Split, Crop, Rotate, Resize and Merge Clips

Filmora has all the necessary tweaks required for video editing. You can trim the unwanted portion of a clip (either video or audio) or split (cut) the clip into various parts and save the selected parts in between. Join (merge) several clips. Insert a new clip in between two clips. You can crop a video to remove some portions of it and save the desired portion – for example, your original video is shot from a distance in which a person appears tiny, so you can scale up and crop the side portions in Filmora so that the person in video becomes visible. Check the easy method to crop and trim clips in Filmora.

Through the Quick Split Mode in Filmora, you can quickly make multiple cuts on your clip which save the editing time. Split tool is placed just above the playhead which stays there as you move the playhead – this is a unique Filmora feature (not available in competitor software) and makes splitting a breeze. The Slide tool is also available to replace and trim the clips.

Compound Clip

It is great tool in Filmora for management of clips. Just select multiple clips (Ctrl + Click) of videos, images, texts, then right-click over any clip and select the Create Compound Clip option. Now it is easy and time saving to apply various settings on the merged clips. for example, you can move around the compound clip anywhere on screen, adjust size, position, opacity etc simultaneously. You can save to use it in media folder to reuse it later in other projects. If turn ON the Sync button, you can use it on all devices such as computer or mobile. This feature also helps to create new effects, new transitions, or new custom animations.

Multi-Clip Editing

Using the latest feature in Filmora, when you select multiple clips in timeline, a Multiple panel will pop up on the right side of the screen. There, you can change the values (size, orientation, color, audio) of all selected clips at once – producing uniformity in design and saving your time. For example, you can resize and crop multiple clips at once. You can apply the same color and font style to multiple selected texts. Similarly, with Multi-Clip Editing in Filmora, you can change the volume of many video clips at once.

Easy Right-Click Menu

If you have no earlier experience in video editing, Filmora provides easy options to choose from the Right-Click menu. Just right-click on a video clip to find some easy and quick options of video editing – including Copy, Paste, Cut, Split, Delete, Detach Audio (from video), Ripple Delete, Duplicate, Crop, Rotate, AI vocal remover, color match, speed ramping.

Transitions

To join two completely different clips (example: one clip in black background and other clip in white or yellow background), a transition (for example push, fade, slide, split, cross-dissolve) is applied between the clips for smooth shifting in the focus of viewer. Various audio and video transitions are available in Filmora.

The Filmora method to apply a transition effect is simple - just drag it and drop between any two clips. You can select the desired time duration for a transition. You can either apply different transitions at different joints between every two clips or you can repeatedly apply a single transition to all joints in a project. To explore the free library of transitions in Filmora, select Transitions option in the top main menu.

Animations

Variety of animation effects are available to apply on text, image, or video for stunning motion styles – for example you can display your logo as flying while rotating onto the screen. Some free preset animations in Filmora include Fade in, Fade out, Slide in, Slide out, Zoom in, Zoom out, Vortex, Bounce to Zoom, Spin, Boom, Slide (left, right, up, down), Stretch, Drop. You can define the position and duration of animation presets by just dragging their keyframes on clip.

The method to apply an animation effect is quite easy - just select the video or image in timeline, and then select the Animation tab from the right-side panel. Please note that if you know keyframing, you can animate elements (text, image, video) in your own custom styles using Filmora.

AI Features

The automated AI features Filmora include AI image generation, AI Copywriting, AI text to video (enter text and generate videos automatically), speech-to-text, AI thumbnail generator.

AI Speech-to-Text tool empowers you to automatically generate transcriptions (subtitles and captions) through automated rendering of the audio – it supports almost all languages including English, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, French, Hindi, Norwegian.

Please note that like all other video editing programs, online access is required to login, to use AI feature as well as to download the transitions, effects, elements from the cloud resources.

If you have no continuous internet connection, then you can downgrade and download the earlier Filmora 9 version, because that old version does not require internet connectivity.

AI Voiceover

Filmora has Text-to-Speech tool (TTS) for creating AI voiceovers. Various sound options are available. Just enter your text and it will instantly create a human-like voiceover. YouTube allows licensed AI voiceovers. Various Dozro videos are created using AI voice. You can choose from more than 28 voices (male and female). It supports all major languages.

Stabilize Shaky Videos

If your original video is shaky caused by camera movements, you can stabilize in Filmora.

To do this select you clip in timeline, then in Video panel (on right side), under AI Tools, turn ON the Stabilization toggle button.

Auto Reframe

The Ai based Filmora Auto Reframe feature enables you to automatically change the orientation - convert a long-form wide video into a short portrait video. For example, you created a video for YouTube (1920x1080 pixels – 16:9 ratio) and after exporting it, you can also create an additional vertical video (1080x1920 pixels – 9:16 ratio) for Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, or a square video (1:1 ratio) for FB and Instagram posts, from the same landscape video, instead of editing it again – thus saving your editing time.

Background Replacement

Use chroma key to remove any-color background – you have no need to shoot your video with physical green screen at background. You can use Filmora AI Smart Cutout feature to brush what you want to keep in a video – everything else will be removed to become transparent, where you can apply other background. For example, you can remove a mountain behind you in the footage and replace it with a beach background.

In fact, if your video editor software has this powerful background removal capability, you do not need to shoot with a physical green screen background.

Adjustment Layer

Adjustment Layer in Filmora layer works invisibly and is useful for applying consistent colors and effects to multiple clips (or to specific duration of a single clip) in timeline, without changing the original clips. It can be saved as a preset for future use on other video projects.

Screen Recorder

Through Filmora Screen Recorder, you can record and save what is playing on your computer screen, for example a YouTube video (including voice). Record either full screen or a part of screen. This is a good feature for creating tutorial videos. It can also be used to record and save a TV program or a gameplay in your device. This feature is not available in many other popular video editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro.

Webcam and Voice Recorder

You can directly record video from webcam or record voiceover through the microphone in Filmora. You can also record screen, camera and voice (microphone) simultaneously in Filmora.

Scaling and Resizing

Easily scale (pan & zoom) a video clip, for example zoom in to show some tiny object in your video – the rest will be automatically cropped out (removed). To reduce or enlarge the size of a video or an image, just select it, and use the easy sliders (in right-side Property panel), to adjust its size. You can also easily resize the aspect ratio or resolution of a video by changing the respective values in settings.

Video Collage

Similar to a photo collage, you can split the screen in Filmora and simultaneously display (and play) multiple videos on a single screen. To place multiple videos side-by-side in Filmora, select Template menu on the top and then click Split Screen for the options.

Easy Timeline Controls

Timeline is the panel where you edit (such as trim, cut, merge) your video and audio clips. Editing in Filmora timeline is easy and approachable. Just right-click over a clip (video, image, or audio) and you get a lot of easy options for fast editing controls. As you drop new clips (video, audio, photo) in timeline, Filmora automatically creates new tracks on a breeze.

All necessary tools such as Text, Split, Crop, Keyframe, Color Match are easily accessible in Filmora Timeline panel. Just select the Custom Toolbar button, to decide which tools should appear above the timeline panel. Through easy slider, you can quickly zoom in/out the elements inside timeline.

Keyboard Shortcuts

For fast editing, you can use various keyboard shortcuts, for example, to cut, copy, save, undo, redo, split, duplicate, adding keyframe. To view all shortcuts inside Filmora software, click File then select Keyboard Shortcuts.

Stock Library

Preloaded free stock files of music, videos, effects, and photos come preloaded with Filmora which you can use free for your video project. For example, click Effects menu then Video Effects to find many options including light, ar stickers, shake, glitch, blur, zoom, magnifier, countdown timer, multi-screen effects. Similarly, in Audio Effects section, you use many sound effects, such as big room, child voice, robot as well as audio visualizers. Various great effects are also available to apply in the sections of Boris FX, and NewBlue FX – check the impressive functionality of Boris FX Continuum in Filmora.

Filmora has built-in integrations with Unsplash, Giphy, Pixabay and Pixels and you get huge variety of stock media such as free text titles, editable video intro and outro templates, effects, stickers, stock video clips, images, and music. Please note that all stock elements do not come free with the paid subscription of Filmora – you can separately subscribe to the stock platforms for full access. Filmora also has its own effects store (Filmstock) which provides free as well as paid elements. Check the price for Filmora Filmstock and external effects Plug-ins.

Easy Start

It is very easy to start a new video project even if you have no prior experience. For example, on start, you can choose a desired aspect ratio for a widescreen (16:9 for YouTube), square (1:1 for Facebook and Instagram feed video), portrait (9:16 for YT Shorts, FB story, Instagram Reels), or vertical (4:5 Instagram ads).

Filmora has complete instructions guide for how to use the software. You can quickly drag-and-drop the elements (video, audio, transitions, effects) to add them in timeline for editing. You can also check free Filmora tutorials on Dozro website.

These are just the highlights of features. There are many more features such as free cloud storage. Check more Filmora Features on their website. You can download Filmora free and try yourself.
