A Guide to the Arabic and English AZERTY Keyboard
Welcome! This guide will walk you through all the features of our dual-language virtual keyboard, designed to make Arabic typing and English composition simple and intuitive. This keyboard uses the standard AZERTY layout common in Algeria, Morocco, France, and other parts of North Africa, making it familiar and easy to use.
Core Features
Dual-Language AZERTY Layout: Seamlessly switch between a full-featured Arabic (102) AZERTY keyboard and an English AZERTY keyboard.
Voice-to-Text: Use your microphone to dictate text in either language for hands-free typing.
Text Tools: A full suite of tools including Undo, Redo, Copy, and Translate are built right in.
Emoji Panel: Access a wide variety of emojis to add personality to your text.
Responsive Design: The keyboard works beautifully on both desktop and mobile devices.
How to Use the Keyboard
The Basics: Typing and Switching Languages
The keyboard defaults to the Arabic (102) AZERTY layout. Simply click or tap the keys to type.
To switch between Arabic and English, click the Eng/عربية button. The keyboard layout, text direction, and placeholder text in the text area will update automatically.
Using Shift and Caps Lock
Shift: Clicking the Shift key gives you access to secondary characters. In English mode, this produces uppercase letters or the symbols printed on the number keys. In Arabic mode, this reveals important diacritics (Tashkeel) and symbols. The Shift key deactivates after one use.
Caps Lock: In English mode, click Caps Lock to type continuously in uppercase. The key will light up when active. Click it again to deactivate.
Special Characters on the Shift Keys
When the Arabic keyboard is active, pressing the Shift key provides access to essential characters for proper writing.
Arabic Diacritics (Tashkeel)
Diacritics are marks placed above or below letters to indicate vowel sounds and other phonetic details. This keyboard includes a full set for accurate Arabic typing:
Fatḥah ( َ ), Dammah ( ُ ), and Kasrah ( ِ ): The primary short vowel sounds.
Tanwīns ( ً, ٌ, ٍ ): Indicate the '-an', '-un', and '-in' sounds, respectively, often used at the end of nouns.
Sukun ( ْ ): Shows that a consonant has no vowel.
Shadda ( ّ ): Doubles the consonant it is placed upon.
Currency and Other Symbols
We have also included useful currency symbols on the Shift layer to make typing financial and technical documents easier.
Voice Typing (Speech-to-Text)
Click the Microphone (🎤) button to start voice typing.
Your browser may ask for permission to use your microphone. Please click "Allow".
The status message will show "Listening..." Start speaking clearly in either Arabic or English.
Your spoken words will be converted into text and inserted into the text area.
Note: if your microphone isn't working, please refer to this article for troubleshooting steps.
Language Recognition
The speech-to-text engine is configured to prioritize Algerian Arabic (using the language code ar-DZ
). If your browser or device does not have specific support for the Arabic dialect, it will automatically use a broader Arabic model (like ar-MA
(Moroccan Arabic) or a general ar
) as a fallback to ensure the best possible recognition.
Other Tools
Undo/Redo (↶/↷): Easily correct mistakes.
Copy: Copies all text from the text area to your clipboard.
Clear All: Erases all text from the text area.
Navigation Keys (←, →, Home, End): Quickly move your cursor through the text.
Translate: Type your text, then click the Translate button. A new Google Translate tab will open with your text automatically set up for translation.
Emoji Keyboard (😀): Click the smiley face icon to open a full emoji keyboard. Tap any emoji to insert it into your text.
