How to Use the Urdu (India)/English Virtual Keyboard

Welcome to the Urdu (India) Online Keyboard by Dozro! This intuitive on-screen keyboard is designed to help you type seamlessly in both Urdu and English, offering a familiar QWERTY phonetic layout for Urdu and essential typing features. It features voice typing (Speech-to-Text) and emoji symbols. If you're looking to type Urdu (India) words using an English keyboard or write English words in Urdu, this is the ideal solution for you. This bilingual keyboard also provides translation for typed text between Urdu and English. Experience this Urdu keyboard tailored specifically for India and its vibrant Urdu speaking regions such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra.

Typing in Urdu and English

The core functionality of this keyboard lies in it dual language support.

  • Switching Languages: Look for the Language Toggle button, labeled "Eng/اردو" (English/Urdu). Clicking or tapping this button will instantly switch the entire keyboard layout between Urdu (with its phonetic mapping) and English (standard QWERTY).

  • Urdu Phonetic Layout: When in Urdu mode, the keyboard uses a phonetic layout. This means that typing English letters will produce their corresponding Urdu sounds (e.g., 'Q' for 'ق', 'T' for 'ت'). This makes typing in Urdu (India) intuitive for those familiar with the English QWERTY layout.

  • English QWERTY Layout: In English mode, the keyboard functions as a standard QWERTY layout, allowing you to type in English alphabet characters.

Modifier Keys

Modifier keys change the character output or behavior of other keys.

  • Shift: The Shift key (labeled "Shift" or with an upward arrow icon on mobile) allows you to type uppercase English letters or alternative characters/diacritics in Urdu. Click it once to activate for the next character, or double-click (or press Caps Lock) for persistent shift.

  • Caps Lock: The Caps Lock key (labeled "Caps Lock" or with an upward arrow icon on mobile) toggles all letter keys to produce their shifted (uppercase in English, alternative in Urdu) characters persistently. Click it again to turn it off.

  • AltGr: The AltGr key (labeled "AltGr") provides access to additional special characters, particularly useful for certain Urdu characters and symbols that aren't available through the standard or Shifted keys. This key is primarily active in Urdu mode.

Special Functions

Your virtual keyboard comes with several convenient features:

  • Undo & Redo: The Undo and Redo buttons (represented by curved arrow icons) allow you to reverse or re-apply your typing actions, providing a safety net for mistakes.

  • Copy: The Copy button lets you quickly copy the selected text from the text area to your device's clipboard. If no text is selected, it will copy all the text.

  • Clear All: The Clear All button instantly clears all text from the text area, giving you a fresh start.

  • Voice Typing: Activate speech-to-text functionality by clicking the Microphone button (🎤). Speak clearly, and your words will appear in the text area. The system automatically detects the active language (Urdu or English) for transcription. Click the microphone again to stop.

    • About ur-IN: When voice typing in Urdu, the keyboard uses the ur-IN language code. This specifies Urdu as spoken in India, ensuring more accurate recognition of accents and vocabulary specific to that region.

    • Note: if your microphone isn't working, please refer to this article for troubleshooting steps.

  • Auto Punctuation: The Auto Punct. button (represented by a circle icon on mobile) toggles automatic punctuation. When active, the system will attempt to add a period (or Urdu full stop) and a space after a pause in your voice typing.

  • Emoji Panel: Click the Emoji button (😀) to open a panel filled with various emojis and symbols. Click any emoji to insert it into your text. Click the "Keyboard" button at the top of the panel to return to the main keyboard.

Translate Feature

The virtual keyboard features a handy Translate button that allows you to swiftly translate your typed text.

How it Works:

  • Bilingual Text Translation: When the Indian Urdu keyboard is active, clicking the “Translate” button will convert text from Urdu to English. Conversely, when the English keyboard is active, clicking “Translate” will convert text from English to Urdu, using Google Translate.

  • Steps:

    1. Type or voice-type any text into the main text area.

    2. Click or tap the Translate button.

    3. If the text area is empty, a temporary message "Type text first!" will appear, and no new tab will open.

    4. If there is text in the text area, a new browser tab will automatically open, redirecting you to Google Translate.

    5. Your typed text will be pre-filled into Google Translate's input field.

    6. Google Translate will automatically detect the source language of your text.

    7. The translation will be displayed in the automatically selected target language (English if Urdu (India) keyboard was active, Indian Urdu if English keyboard was active).

Important Note for Mobile Users:

On mobile devices with the Google Translate app, clicking "Translate" might open the app instead of the web page, and it may not pre-fill your text. To work around this, click "Copy" first to save your text, then "Translate," and paste it in the app.

Cursor Navigation

Navigate your text efficiently using these keys:

  • Arrow Keys (←, →): Move the text cursor left or right. In Urdu (Right-to-Left) mode, the visual left arrow moves the cursor logically right, and vice-versa.

  • Home: Moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line.

  • End: Moves the cursor to the end of the current line.

  • Backspace: Deletes the character immediately before the cursor.

Responsive Design

This online keyboard is designed to be mobile-friendly and fully responsive. It automatically adjusts its layout and key sizes to provide an optimal typing experience on various devices, from smartphones to tablets and desktop computers.

Enjoy typing with your new Urdu (India)/English Virtual Keyboard!
