It features voice typing (Speech-to-Text) and emoji symbols. It uses a Unicode font of Noto Sans Devanagari. How to Use the Keyboard

Typing and Switching Languages

The keyboard defaults to the Hindi layout. Simply click or tap the keys to type. For example, pressing the 'k' key will type 'क'.

To switch between Hindi and English, click the Eng/हिंदी button. The keyboard layout and the placeholder text in the text area will update automatically.

Using Shift and Caps Lock

• Shift: Clicking the Shift key gives you access to a secondary layer of characters. In English mode, this produces uppercase letters. In Hindi mode, this reveals important vowel signs (matras) and other symbols. The Shift key deactivates after one use.

• Caps Lock: In English mode, click Caps Lock to type continuously in uppercase. The key will light up when active. Click it again to deactivate.

The Shift Key Layer

When the Hindi keyboard is active, pressing the Shift key provides access to essential characters for proper writing.

• Hindi Diacritics (Matras):

  • Vowel Signs: Includes all the primary vowel signs (matras) such as ा (aa), ि (i), ी (ee), ु (u), ू (oo), and े (e).

  • Other Diacritics: Access important marks like the Virama ( ् ) which is used to suppress the inherent vowel of a consonant, and Anusvara (ं).

  • Full Vowels: The Shift layer also provides access to the full vowel characters like आ, ई, ऊ, etc.

The AltGr Key Layer

Voice Typing (Speech-to-Text)

1. Click the Microphone (🎤) button to start voice typing.

2. Your browser may ask for permission to use your microphone. Please click "Allow".

3. The status message will show "Listening..." Start speaking clearly in your selected language.

4. Your spoken words will be converted into text.

5. Note: if your microphone isn't working, please refer to this article for troubleshooting steps.

6. Auto Punctuation (Auto Punct.):

   • Click the "Auto Punct." button to toggle this feature on or off. The button will turn green when active.

   • When active, after each voice input segment, the keyboard will automatically add a period (.) for English or a Hindi full stop, followed by a space. This helps in quickly forming sentences during voice typing.

Language Recognition

The speech-to-text engine is configured for specific dialects to improve accuracy.

• Hindi Mode: Uses language code hi-IN for Indian Hindi.

• English Mode: Uses language code en-US for US English.

• Fallback: If your browser doesn't support a specific dialect, it will automatically use a general language model (hi or en) to ensure the feature still works.

Translate Feature

The virtual keyboard features a handy Translate button that allows you to swiftly translate your typed text.

How it Works:

• Bilingual Text Translation: When the Hindi keyboard is active, clicking the “Translate” button will convert text from Hindi to English. Conversely, when the English keyboard is active, clicking “Translate” will convert text from English to Hindi, using Google Translate.

• Steps:

  1. Type or voice-type any text into the main text area.

  2. Click or tap the Translate button.

  3. If the text area is empty, a temporary message "Type text first!" will appear, and no new tab will open.

  4. If there is text in the text area, a new browser tab will automatically open, redirecting you to Google Translate.

  5. Your typed text will be pre-filled into Google Translate's input field.

  6. Google Translate will automatically detect the source language of your text.

  7. The translation will be displayed in the automatically selected target language (English if Hindi keyboard was active, Hindi if English keyboard was active).

Important Note for Mobile Users:

On mobile devices with the Google Translate app, clicking "Translate" might open the installed app instead of the web page, and it may not pre-fill your text. To work around this, click "Copy" first to save your text, then "Translate," and paste it in the app.
