How to use the Sanskrit Virtual Keyboard (Devanagari Script)

Welcome to Sanskrit Devanagari online keyboard by Dozro! This guide will help you quickly learn its features.

1. Basic Typing and Characters

  • Sanskrit (Devanagari) Characters: The central area of the keyboard features Sanskrit Devanagari characters mapped phonetically to the standard QWERTY layout.

    • Normal Characters: Simply click the corresponding letter button. For example, k will produce , a will produce .

    • Shifted Characters: To type certain aspirated consonants (e.g., for kha), long vowels (e.g., for aa), or other specific characters, press the Shift key (left or right) before clicking the corresponding phonetic key. Shift will automatically deactivate after you type one character, unless Caps Lock is active.

      • Examples: Shift + k for , Shift + a for .

    • Special Consonants/Conjuncts: Some less common but important Sanskrit consonants and conjuncts are mapped to less used QWERTY keys or shifted combinations:

      • q for (ṅa)

      • Shift + q for (ña)

      • z for (ṣa)

      • Shift + z for ज्ञ (jña)

      • x for क्ष (kṣa)

      • Shift + x for त्र (tra)

  • Conjuncts (संयुक्त व्यंजन): To form conjunct consonants (e.g., क् + = क्ष), you will type the first consonant, then the virama (्) key (mapped to \ on the keyboard), followed by the second consonant. The browser's text rendering engine, with the correct font, will usually combine them automatically into a ligature.

    • Example: Type then then to get क्ष.

  • Dependent Vowel Signs (मात्राएँ): To add dependent vowel signs (matras) to a consonant, first type the consonant, then type the corresponding vowel. The vowel will combine with the consonant.

    • Example: Type then (typed by Shift + a) to get का.

  • Anusvara (ं) and Visarga (ः):

    • Anusvara () is typically found by typing Shift + m.

    • Visarga () is typically found by typing Shift + h.

  • Avagraha (ऽ): This symbol is used in Sanskrit to indicate the elision of an initial (a) vowel. It is mapped to Shift + ' (apostrophe) on this keyboard.

2. Symbols and Numbers

  • Numbers: Numbers are located on the top row. By default, they produce Devanagari digits (०, १, २, ३, ४, ५, ६, ७, ८, ९). Standard Western numeric digits (0-9) can be accessed by pressing Shift and the corresponding number key.

  • Symbols: Common symbols (e.g., ` , !, @, #, etc.) are available by simple clicks or by holding the Shift key as indicated on the keys.

  • Danda (।): The Danda, which acts as a full stop in Devanagari, is mapped to the key (next to space on the bottom right) in its normal state. The period . is available on Shift + ।.

3. Special Action Buttons

The top rows of the keyboard include tools for working with your text:

  • Undo: Cancels your last action.

  • Redo: Reapplies an undone action.

  • Copy: Copies the selected text, or all text if nothing is selected.

  • Delete: Deletes the character before the cursor or the selected text.

  • Clear All: Erases all text from the input field.

4. Cursor Movement and Navigation

Dedicated arrow buttons allow for precise cursor control.

  • ← (Left): Moves the cursor one character to the left.

  • → (Right): Moves the cursor one character to the right.

  • Home: Moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line.

  • End: Moves the cursor to the end of the current line.

5. Emoji Panel (😀)

6. Voice Typing (🎤)

  • Click the 🎤 (Mic) button to enable/disable voice typing.

  • When active, you will see a "Listening... Please speak now." message above the keyboard. Please speak clearly for your voice to be converted into text.

  • Important Note: Voice typing uses the Sanskrit language model (sa-IN). This is more likely to produce correct Devanagari Sanskrit text compared to a Romanization voice model.

  • If voice typing is not supported or microphone access is denied, you will see a relevant message.

  • Voice typing will automatically stop if you press any key on the keyboard or click outside the input field.

7. Physical Keyboard Synchronization

This virtual keyboard will synchronize with your physical keyboard for Shift and Caps Lock keys. Other physical key presses will also be reflected visually on the virtual keyboard where a direct character match exists. This allows you to seamlessly switch between physical and virtual typing.
