Adobe Premiere Pro Secret Video Editing Features List in 2024

The following features and functions are available in Adobe Premiere Pro video editor software. The information in this article is accurate and authentic; however, you can help improve it by suggesting necessary edits.

Premiere Pro Features

Adobe Premiere Pro works on Windows PC and Mac computer πŸ’» only. It does not offer mobile πŸ“± apps for Android and iPhone.

Overlays

You can add your own logo image or watermark text (PiP layer) on your videos to secure from content thieves or copycats. For example, in this video tutorial of Premiere Pro, you can observe how I displayed my own photo as well as a moving Dozro logo over the main video. It is also possible to add another video over the background video, by stacking video layers in different tracks.

You can also get overlay templates from Adobe Stock, for additional price.

Masking

You can apply masks in Premiere Pro by either using quick shapes (such as ellipse, rectangle) or draw manual mask shapes. Masking is often used to make some portions of video (image too) transparent. For example, you can remove the corners of a square photo or video to display or save as a round or more shapes. A mask is also applied to blur the face of a person or the number plate of a moving car. You can also draw a custom mask around an object to make its surroundings transparent. You can also hide something specific (a text, or image) from your video.

Check how I blurred out a face moving behind another person through masking in Premiere Pro.

Keyframing

Adobe Premiere Pro Features

Adobe Premiere Pro provides precise controls for manual keyframing. This feature is used for creating slideshows and motion animations, for example to control the size, time duration, opacity, rotation, and position of a logo image over the background video. It is also used in custom masking and tracking a movement. In fact, keyframing is used for total control in multiple tools – for example, time remapping (also called speed ramping).

Learn Keyframing Method in Adobe Premiere Pro, in this Dozro tutorial.

Time Remapping

Apply various speeds to a single clip to make it slow and fast at various time stamps (durations) to capture the attention of viewers. Watch our this tutorial video to learn Speed Ramping (Time Remapping) in Adobe Premiere Pro.

In addition to freezing a frame, you can also play a video backwards (reverse) to amaze the viewers.

Text Options

Write or paste a text (in any language) over the video. Apply any color, size, or font style to a text. You can also animate the text in your own styles through the help of keyframes in Premiere Pro. Adobe Premiere Pro has a huge library of web fonts, comparable with Google Fonts. You can apply your favorite font to a text in Premiere Pro. Limited text title templates are there inside the Essential Graphics panel.

Motion Tracking

Move a text, video clip or image to follow something, for example name a running person in a marathon. As another example, you can hide the number plate of a moving car through motion tracking. In my experience, the automatic motion tracking in Adobe Premiere Pro is not accurate most of the time – so you can apply manual keyframes for accurate motion tracking.

Time Interpolation

This term might be intimidating for newbies, but it is a very important function of any video editing software. Adobe Premiere Pro allows you to choose from Frame Sampling, Frame Blending, and Optical Flow. It is really a useful function – for example, when you speed up or slow down a clip, some frames are removed or added for a fluid and smooth motion in exported footage. I have elaborated Time Interpolation in detail in this article.

Media Exports

Exporting an edited video in Adobe Premiere pro is a little complicated for new users as compared to other software such as Filmora. You may watch my video tutorial where I have explained every tweak in Export Settings of Adobe Premiere Pro in simple words. You can save your edited video (or only audio) either in your computer or in Adobe Cloud or directly upload to your logged-in social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo. Export video in any frame size such as landscape videos for YouTube, or vertical videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels. You can export video or only the audio into various formats including the popular MP4, MP3, and GIF. You can watch my video for 3 methods to export video as transparent (alpha) background in Premiere Pro. You can save images (JPG, PNG) from your video on your computer. It supports the audio export in mono, stereo, and 5.1 Surround Sound channels.

Audio Editing

In Adobe Premiere pro, you can detach audio from a video and either merge it with another video in the timeline or save only the audio in computer. Remove noise from the audio of your video. Adobe Premiere Pro is equipped with audio remixing features. You also get royalty-free music audios but not more than 10 files – for more audios you must subscribe to Adobe Stock. Adobe Premiere Pro lets you copy the audio effects applied to one clip and paste the same effects to any other clip, making the editing process fast. For advanced audio editing features such as adaptive noise reduction, automatic click removal, studio reverb you can download Adobe Audition and use it integrated with Adobe Premiere Pro. Please note that you must buy the subscription for Adobe Audition separately – it is not included in Premiere Pro package.

It can automatically sync the video with audio. However, read the easy method by Dozro to match voiceover audio clips with video clips manually in Premiere Pro.

Color Editing

In Premiere pro, you can double click over a color effect to apply it over the video clip for enhancing its colors. Manipulate the color of your footage through Lumetri color presets. Change color values of a video such as saturation, tint, temperature, exposure, brightness, vibrance, contrast, shadow. More color editing options are also available including HDR, sharpen, white balance, color matching, color wheels. It enables you to apply color adjustments over the masked portions only. Premiere Pro can effectively auto enhance a video clip in single click – for that click on β€˜Auto’ in the Lumetri Color panel. Various input LUTs options are also available. Through color picker tool, you can identify the color of any surface in your video (or photo) and apply the same color to a text, font, or shape. In the Lumetri Color panel, the option to use color wheels and curves, is also there.

Trim, Split, Crop, Rotate, Resize and Merge Clips

It has all the tweaks needed for video editing. You can trim the unwanted portion of a clip (either video or audio) or split (cut) the clip into various parts and save the selected parts in between. Join (merge) several clips. Insert a new clip in between two clips. You can crop out the unwanted portions from your video footage. Check Dozro article for seven methods to split clips in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Right-Click Options

For new users, the right-click menu in Adobe Premiere Pro offers many handy options including Cut, Copy, Paste, Ripple Delete, Unlink (Detach Audio from Video), Speed/Duration, Adjustment Layer, Scale to frame Size, Show Clip Keyframes, Clear, Rename. Please note that to delete a clip in Premiere Pro, you can select the clip in timeline and then press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Transitions

To join two completely different clips, a transition (for example push, fade, slide, split, cross-dissolve) is applied between the clips for smooth shifting in the focus of viewer. Various audio and video transitions in Premiere Pro are available – you can use the search box in Effects panel to apply a nice transition. You can select the desired time duration for a transition. You can either apply different transitions at different joints between every two clips or you can repeatedly apply a single transition to all clip joints in a project. Some popular transition effects (pre-built and free) in Premiere Pro include Dissolve, Iris, Cube Spin, Flip Over, Split, Slide, Push, Wipe. You can also buy and integrate other third-party plugins to get more transitions.

Animations

Premiere Pro has a very limited selection of moving animation effects – I could not find out other than the Twirl In, Twirl Out animation. Please note that pro users of Premiere Pro, having the knowledge of keyframing, can easily animate any element (text, image, video) in their own custom motion styles. You can access some other free motion graphics templates in the Essential Graphics panel. You can also buy more templates from Adobe Stock, or other third party sources.

AI Features

Adobe Premiere Pro is equipped with various automated AI features powered by Adobe Sensei for shortening the editing time. It can automatically detect the unwanted filler-words and remove them. It can automatically reframe (for making fit for various social media sizes, say wide, square, vertical) your footage – check the Auto Reframe option under the Transform folder in effects panel – However, AI based auto reframing functionality of Filmora is more efficient in keeping the main focal point within visible frame. The Enhance Speech tool can automatically detect and remove the unpleasant background noise. You can use the AI Speech-to-Text tool of Premiere Pro to create captions, and transcripts. The Scene Edit Detection tool in Premiere Pro can automatically analyze the longer footage and generate various shorter but important parts of the video, thus saving your time – right-click over a video clip to select the Scene Edit Detection tool. Select the Auto Color tool to automatically apply the best color corrections, with a single click. Other AI features in Premiere Pro include Morph Cut (uses face tracking to remove unwanted pauses in video), Color Match (automatically matches the color values of two different clips), Remix (auto sync or match the audio and video tracks), Auto Ducking (music track fader for clarity of narration). Adobe provides various generative AI features through Adobe Firefly such as Text-to-Image, Generative Fill and Text-to-Template. Please note that if you buy Premiere Pro subscription, you get only 25 monthly AI credits. For additional credits, you must also buy Adobe Firefly subscription.

This level of AI based auto reframing functionality of Filmora is not available in any other video editing software. Although Premiere Pro can also auto reframe, but Filmora is more efficient in keeping the main focal point within visible frame.

Stabilize Shaky Videos

If your original video is shaky caused by camera movements, you can stabilize in Adobe Premiere Pro. For example, you can apply Warp Stabilize or No Motion effect over the video clip to stabilize it.

Background Replacement

Use chroma key to remove any-color background – you have no need to shoot your video with physical green screen in the background. You may watch the Dozro tutorial video to remove a single color background or our other popular tutorial for removing and replacing a complex background with multiple colors or persons.

Adjustment Layer

This layer in Premiere Pro works invisibly and is useful for applying consistent colors and effects to multiple clips (or to specific duration of a single clip) in timeline, without changing the original clips. It can be saved as a preset for future use on other video projects.

Webcam and Voice Recorder

You can record voiceovers directly in Premiere Pro. To record, just click the Mic symbol in the audio track and start speaking in your microphone. You cannot directly record through webcam in Premiere Pro. To record from camcorder, a complicated process exists – first you connect the DV camcorder through FireWire port, then select Capture panel from the Window menu, and adjust the settings. Premiere Pro lacks the screen recording tool.

360 Degree Video

You can import and edit 360 degree video in Premiere Pro. Just import your VR video into the software. To choose your desired settings, click Wrench symbol in Timeline toolbar and select VR Video β†’ Settings. To set the preview window into VR Mode, click Wrench symbol, and select Video β†’ VR Mode. To export 360 degree video in Premiere Pro, do not forget to check mark the VR Video checkbox in export settings.

Multicam Editing

In Premiere Pro, you can combine sync and edit the original video footage from multiple camera sources into a single video. The multi-camera editing in Premiere Pro is useful for events and wedding videos where you capture a same scene with multiple cameras.

8K Video Editing

You can import an Ultra HD 8K video (7680 x 4320 pixels) in the timeline of Premiere Pro for further editing and export in 4K resolution. Adobe Premiere Pro requires the use of Media Encoder to import and edit Ultra HD videos. Premiere Pro cannot export in 8K except after using some external plugins. You may read an insightful article by Adobe about using the 8K resolution video.

Scaling and Resizing

You can easily scale a video clip, for example zoom in to show some tiny object in your video – the rest will be automatically cropped out (removed). You can adjust the zoom levels of the viewer screen (Adobe calls it Program Monitor) from 10% to 1600% which is useful for close-up editing. Watch the method to enlarge Program Monitor in Premiere Pro.

Keyboard Shortcuts

For fast editing, you can use various keyboard shortcuts, for example, to cut, copy, save, undo, redo, split, duplicate, adding keyframe. To view all shortcuts inside Adobe Premiere Pro software, click Edit button on the top and then select Keyboard Shortcuts. Some functions such as Delete only work through keyboard keys.

Stock Library

You get a limited number of files (music, videos) packed free with the subscription of Adobe Premiere Pro. You must also get a paid subscription of Adobe Stock for additional media files, such as music audios, illustrations, photos, videos, fonts, and preset templates. Premiere Pro has no built-in integrations with third-party stock websites.

Interface

The Premiere Pro interface has advanced capabilities but difficult to understand for a new user. You can undock and float the panels when needed. You can choose from various default workspaces or create custom workspaces as well. It is quick to switch between the Import, Edit, and Export options on the top. You can change the size of panels – for example, you can increase the viewer (Program Monitor) panel when needed. A pro tip for you is that if accidentally you close a panel (or a panel is not showing), just click on the Window menu on the top and select that.
