Movavi Video Editor Features

Movavi Video Editor is an intuitive video editor with customizable video templates, one-click AI tools, and hundreds of drag-and-drop effects. Below is the complete rundown of what the program can do. The software is available on desktop Windows 10/11 and macOS 12+ 💻.

Movavi Video Templates

Building the same intro-and-outro sequence from scratch for every upload gets old fast. Movavi Video Templates is a multi-style library of customizable, pro-looking, modular templates for any kind of video.

It includes pre-cut, pre-arranged segments called Blocks – such as intro, a countdown, or an animated collage – ready to drop footage into. Swap in your own clips, drag Blocks into a new order, or delete the ones you don't need, and the rest of the layout shifts to match.

Auto Subtitles

Movavi converts a video's audio track into on-screen captions automatically, cutting out the manual line-by-line transcription most editors still demand. Once generated, subtitles can be translated into English, edited line by line inside a dedicated Phrases panel, and restyled either one subtitle at a time or across the whole project.

Auto-Silence Removal

Instead of scrubbing the timeline hunting for dead air, Movavi can scan a clip and cut the pauses out on its own. It can run automatically or manually, with controls for volume threshold, pause duration, delay, and how gaps are handled. For talking-head footage, voiceovers, or anything with a lot of space between sentences, this swaps a repetitive manual cutting pass for a single detection step.

Auto-Tracked Cropping

The tool keeps a speaker or product centered as it reframes footage automatically, including converting horizontal clips to vertical for platforms like TikTok or Instagram Reels. It draws on the same target aspect ratios available from the preview window when a new project starts, and in testing, it tracked more smoothly and precisely than competing tools in 7 of 10 head-to-head comparisons.

AI Video Denoise

It strips grain and low-light artifacts out of a clip while keeping faces, textures, and edges intact. The tool is a useful fix for older mobile footage, dim indoor vlogging setups, or getting a clean edge before chroma keying.

Background Replacement

Chroma key, found under More Tools, removes a background of any single color without requiring an actual physical green screen on set. A built-in color picker lets you sample the exact shade to remove rather than guessing at it. For backgrounds made up of multiple colors, AI background removal makes the background transparent so you can replace it with another image or video.

Video Stabilization

Camera shake in your source footage doesn't have to stay in the final cut. Movavi can stabilize it: open More Tools, choose Stabilization under Video Editing, then click Stabilize.

Motion Tracking

Motion tracking locks a text layer, clip, or image to something moving in the frame, tagging a runner in a marathon with their name, say, or covering a moving car's license plate as it drives. Movavi's version is AI-powered and generally accurate, and the motion tracking tool offers the same three modes as masking: Quick, Precise, or Artificial intelligence.

Text Formatting Options

Movavi's text editing options cover what most projects need. To place text on a video, open Titles in the sidebar, pick a title style, and drag it onto the timeline. From there you can swap in your own wording, and apply whatever color, size, or font the design calls for. A dedicated countdown/timer title style is also built in, for on-screen intros or timed segments.

Masking

Masking hides part of a frame, in a video or a still image. That might mean cutting the corners off a square photo to output it as a circle, blurring a face or a license plate, or concealing a specific object, some text, or an image entirely. To apply a mask, go to More Tools and select Highlight and conceal.

Keyframing

Keyframing drives animated movement, and Movavi's version is straightforward if limited. Under More Tools, the Animation section splits into Easy and Advanced modes. Easy mode gives you ready-made animation presets you can apply quickly; you can still adjust the movement by adding or editing keyframes, though the keyframe controls are more limited than in advanced editing software.

Overlay

Dropping your own logo or watermark onto a video as a picture-in-picture layer is one way to deter content thieves and copycats. To do it, drag the overlay image or video onto the top track above your main clip. Movavi also lets you animate that overlay with keyframes in the Animation tab, and offers a range of blending modes for each overlay effect.

Adjust Speed

A speed slider handles pace changes clip by clip, and a freeze-frame effect is one right-click away on any clip in the timeline. Slow motion is available per clip as well. What's missing is a speed ramp: because Movavi lacks advanced keyframing, you can't vary the speed at different points within a single clip.

Reverse a Video

Playing a clip in reverse can create an unexpected effect – an airplane taking off backward, say. To reverse a clip in Movavi, select it on the Timeline, open Clip Properties, and check the Reverse box.

Exports

Exporting is straightforward, whether you're outputting the finished video or just the MP3 audio. Save the result locally or push it straight to a social platform, in landscape for YouTube or vertical for TikTok, YT Shorts, and Instagram Reels. Supported formats include MP4, MP3, and GIF, and you can pull individual frames as JPG or PNG stills.

To export, click Export at the top of the screen and pick an option: Export Video, Export Audio, Upload to YouTube, Upload to Vimeo, Upload to Google Drive, or Upload to TikTok. The following screen lets you set resolution, frame size, and other output settings. This guide covers recommended export settings for YouTube specifically.

Audio Editing Features

A voice-enhancement preset lives inside Movavi's Equalizer tool, and pitch-shifting options are available among the audio effects. There's a dedicated button for recording a voiceover directly.

AI Audio Noise Removal cleans up rough audio in one step. You can detach a clip's audio track entirely, either to add it to another video or to save it as a standalone file, and there’s also a royalty-free music library. Speed changes don't distort the audio, and syncing audio to video is a single-click operation.

To reach these tools, go to More Tools then Audio, where the Noise removal option sits alongside the rest.

Color Editing

Color filters can be applied by drag and drop, and the Magic Enhance tool auto-corrects a clip or image quickly. Under More Tools → Color Adjustments, presets cover auto contrast, auto saturation, and auto white balance, and manual sliders handle brightness, saturation, tint, temperature, hue, contrast, and shadow.

Movavi's color tools stay basic by design. The automatic presets are easy to use, but they're not fine-tunable on their own; applying auto saturation, for instance, gives you no slider to dial the effect up or down afterward.

That said, the Advanced tab does expose manual sliders for saturation and the other values if you want direct control. Fisheye correction and similar lens fixes live under a separate Distortion filter category rather than alongside these color tools.

Proxy Video Editing

With proxy editing, Movavi generates low-resolution versions of your HD or 4K footage for smoother timeline playback and better performance on less powerful computers. These proxy files don’t affect final export quality. Movavi calls this feature Fast Track HD.

Trim, Split, Crop, Rotate, Resize and Merge Clips

The core cutting tools are all here. Trim a video or audio clip from either end, or split it into pieces and keep just the segment you need. Clips can be merged together, and a new clip can be inserted between two existing ones.

Cropping removes unwanted areas of the frame and can bring a distant subject closer. Rotation moves in 90-degree steps, and a separate slider straightens a tilted horizon without a full rotation.

By default, deleting or moving a clip closes the resulting gap and pulls the next clip left automatically; click the arrow button on a track if you'd rather the gap stay open.

Pre-Timeline Trimming

Trimming doesn't have to wait until a clip is already on the timeline. Movavi lets you set in and out points on a source clip inside the project window first, then drop only that trimmed section onto the timeline, skipping the cleanup pass for footage you already know you'll only partially use.

Transitions

Transitions such as pushes, fades, slides, splits, and cross-dissolves smooth the cut between visually different clips. Movavi offers both audio and video transitions with adjustable duration, and you can apply a different transition at each cut point or repeat one transition across every cut in a project.

Webcam and Voice Recorder

You can record from a webcam or connected microphone directly in the app. You can also record your own voice while the video plays back, keeping it in sync automatically.

Scaling and Resizing

Pan and zoom scales a clip up, useful for drawing attention to something small in the frame, cropping out the rest automatically as it goes. Manual resizing works by dragging corner handles in the Viewer panel, most often paired with the Position tool for a picture-in-picture or overlay layout. Auto Crop also has a manual mode for setting the frame yourself.

Video Collage

Splitting the screen to show multiple videos playing at once works much like a photo collage. For a split-screen layout, go to More Tools then Position and choose an effect like Picture in Picture or Side by Side.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Cutting, copying, saving, undoing, redoing, splitting, and duplicating all have keyboard shortcuts for faster editing. The full list is available from the Help button at the top of the screen.

Stock Library

Movavi ships with a preloaded library of free music, video clips, effects, and photos, all cleared for use. Storyblocks integration adds premium Stock music, while Movavi’s additional effects library is available separately.

Movavi Ideas

Outside the software itself, Movavi runs a free tutorial hub called Movavi Ideas, created specifically for Movavi Video Editor users and updated regularly. Rather than general editing theory, it's organized around concrete project types, vlogs, vertical clips, business content, holiday videos, family content, and similar formats, each paired with a step-by-step walkthrough. If you need a starting point for this week's upload it gives you a quick place to start.

Easy Start

Starting a new project requires no prior experience. Pick an aspect ratio: 16:9 widescreen for YouTube, 1:1 square for Facebook and Instagram feed video, 9:16 portrait for YouTube Shorts, Facebook Stories, or Instagram Reels, or 4:3 for LinkedIn. The Settings lets you enter a custom aspect ratio. Movavi's own site has full instructions for getting started. Most editing is then done by dragging video, audio, and effects onto the timeline, and right-clicking a clip surfaces a set of quick editing options.

A features comparison across Movavi's different plans is also worth a look.
