Irish English Typing Test & Keyboard Practice: User Guide

Are you looking to check your typing speed and accuracy? Grand! You’ve come to the right place. Most standard online tests use American or British English, which is grand, but it’s not quite the same as how we chat and write here in Ireland. Our free Irish English typing test is designed for anyone who wants to improve their typing skills with a bit of local flavour. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or just want to see how fast you can type "what's the craic?", this is the tool for you. This WPM test offers a proper challenge with words and paragraphs you’ll actually recognise.

Key Features of the Test

Our typing test is packed with features to help you get the most out of your typing practice:

  • Authentic Irish Content: Forget generic sentences. Our tests use paragraphs full of Irish history, culture, and slang, plus a word mode packed with terms like "eejit", "gaff", and "sláinte".

  • Two Distinct Modes: Choose between ‘Paragraph Mode’ to test your flow and endurance or ‘Words Mode’ for rapid-fire keyboarding skills practice.

  • Customisable Timers: Whether you have a spare minute or want a longer challenge, you can set the timer for 30, 60, or 120 seconds.

  • Detailed Results: After each test, you’ll get instant feedback on your Words Per Minute (WPM), Characters Per Minute (CPM), and, most importantly, your typing accuracy.

  • Track Your Progress: The test automatically saves your results, allowing you to track your improvement over time and see how your typing speed is coming along.

How to Use This Test

Getting started is a piece of cake. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Choose Your Settings: First, decide if you want to practice with full paragraphs or random words by selecting 'Paragraph' or 'Words'. Then, pick your preferred test duration: 30, 60, or 120 seconds. The 60-second test is selected by default.

  2. Start the Test: Once you're happy with your settings, click the big 'Start Test' button. The timer won't begin until you type your first character, so you've a moment to get ready.

  3. Get Typing: As soon as you start typing in the input box, the timer begins. You'll see the text you need to type in the display area above. Correctly typed letters will be highlighted in green, and any mistakes will show up in red.

  4. Review Your Results: When the time is up, the test will end automatically. You'll see a detailed breakdown of your WPM, CPM, accuracy, and error count. You can also review the text you typed to see exactly where you made mistakes. Click 'Try Again' to have another go!

How is Irish English Different?

While we share a language with the UK and the US, Irish English has its own unique charm. Using our test helps you get used to these differences.

  • Vocabulary: This is the big one. In Ireland, you put your shopping in the boot of the car (not the trunk), wear runners (not trainers or sneakers), and keep your biscuits in the press (not the cupboard). Our test includes plenty of this unique vocabulary.

  • Spelling: Generally, our spelling is much closer to British English. We use "colour" instead of "color" and "centre" instead of "center". So, if you’re used to American English, this will be good practice.

  • Grammar and Phrases: We have some unique turns of phrase, often influenced by the Irish language (Gaeilge). You might hear someone say, "I'm after forgetting his name," which means they've just forgotten it. Our paragraphs capture this natural, conversational style.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a good typing speed?

For most people, an average typing speed is around 40 WPM. However, for professional or administrative roles, a speed of 60 to 70 WPM or higher is often expected. The key is to find a balance; a high WPM is no good if your typing accuracy is low. Focus on being accurate first, and the speed will follow.

How can I improve my typing speed with this test?

The best way is through consistent typing practice. Use the test daily, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Don't get disheartened by mistakes. Instead, use the review section to see where you went wrong. Make sure you’re sitting comfortably, with good posture, and try to type without looking at the keyboard.

Why should I use a specific Irish English typing test?

Using a test with familiar language makes practice more engaging and relevant. It helps you type the words and phrases you use every day, which is far more practical than typing generic content. Plus, it's a bit of craic seeing local slang pop up! It’s the perfect tool for anyone in Ireland looking for a truly effective online typing test.
