Key Features of the Test

Our typing test is chocka with features to help you get the most out of your practice:

How is New Zealand English Different?

While our language is similar to British and American English, the Kiwi dialect has its own unique flavour. Our test helps you get the hang of these differences.

  • Vocabulary: This is a big one. In New Zealand, you wear jandals to the beach (not flip-flops), put on your togs for a swim (not bathers), grab snacks from the dairy (not the corner store), and keep your drinks cold in a chilly bin (not a cooler).

  • Spelling: Our spelling is almost identical to British English. We use "colour" not "color," and "centre" not "center." So if you're used to American spelling, it's good practice.

  • The Accent: The famous Kiwi accent involves a specific vowel shift. The short 'i' sound can sound like a 'u', making "fish and chips" sound a bit like "fush and chups." While you can't hear it in a typing test, our content is written how a New Zealander would write, reflecting the natural rhythm of the language.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a good typing speed?

For most people, an average typing speed is about 40 WPM. For jobs that require a lot of typing, a speed of 60 to 70 WPM or higher is often looked for. The main thing is to balance speed with accuracy; there's no point being fast if you're making heaps of mistakes. Focus on getting it right first, and the speed will come.

How can I get better at typing with this test?

The key is consistent typing practice. Have a go every day, even for just a few minutes. Don't worry about errors; use the review section to see where you can improve. Make sure you're sitting properly, and try your best to type without looking down at the keys. You'll get the hang of it!

Why should I use a specific NZ English typing test?

Practising with familiar language makes it more interesting and useful. It helps you get faster at typing the words and phrases you use in your everyday life, which is way more practical than typing generic text. Plus, it's a bit of fun seeing Kiwi slang pop up. It’s the perfect tool for anyone in Aotearoa wanting a genuinely effective online typing test.
