User Guide to the Traditional Chinese (Zhuyin/Bopomofo)/English Virtual Keyboard for Taiwan (台灣繁體中文(注音/注音符號)/英文虛擬鍵盤使用者指南)

Welcome to the free Traditional Chinese Online Zhuyin Keyboard by Dozro! This guide will walk you through all the features of our dual-language virtual keyboard (虛擬鍵盤), designed to make both Traditional Chinese typing (繁體中文打字) and English composition simple and intuitive. This keyboard uses the standard Zhuyin input method (注音輸入法), also known as Bopomofo, which is the primary phonetic system for typing traditional characters in Taiwan. This is a complete Traditional Chinese keyboard (繁體中文鍵盤) solution for all your needs.

It features voice typing (Speech-to-Text) and emoji symbols. If you're looking to type Traditional Chinese words using an English keyboard or write English words in Traditional Chinese, this is the ideal solution for you. This bilingual Zhuyin/Bopomofo Chinese keyboard (雙語輸入) also provides translation for typed text between Traditional Chinese and English (英文到中文鍵盤). This keyboard is specifically designed for the people of Taiwan to ensure accurate speech recognition for voice typing in Traditional Chinese, with Zhuyin/Bopomofo layout.

Core Features (核心功能)

  • Expanded Zhuyin Dictionary (擴充注音碼表): A comprehensive dictionary with thousands of the most common Traditional Chinese characters.

  • Frequency-Sorted Candidates (常用字優先排序): When multiple characters match a sound, the most common ones appear first, making selection faster.

  • Phrase Matching (詞語聯想): After selecting a character, the keyboard intelligently suggests common words and phrases, dramatically speeding up typing.

  • Dual Language Mode (雙語模式): Seamlessly switch between the Zhuyin keyboard and a standard English QWERTY keyboard with a single click.

  • Voice-to-Text (語音輸入): Use your microphone for hands-free dictation in both Mandarin Chinese (Taiwan accent) and English.

  • Rich Symbol Sets (豐富的符號集): Access a wide range of punctuation and custom cultural symbols using the Shift and AltGr keys.

  • Full Suite of Tools (全套工具): Includes an emoji panel, text management tools (Undo, Redo, Copy), and a one-click translate button.

  • Physical Keyboard Support (實體鍵盤支援): Use your computer's keyboard to type Zhuyin symbols and select candidates for a fast, mouse-free experience.

How to Use the Keyboard (如何使用鍵盤)

Typing and Switching Languages (打字與語言切換)

The keyboard defaults to the Zhuyin layout. Your final text appears in the main text area. The bars below it are for composing Zhuyin syllables and selecting characters.

  • Language Switching (語言切換): To switch between Chinese and English, click the Eng/注音 button. The keyboard layout and placeholder text will update automatically.

Typing with Zhuyin (Bopomofo) (使用注音(ㄅㄆㄇㄈ)輸入)

The Zhuyin method is a phonetic system. You type the symbols that make up the sound of a character, followed by a tone mark.

  1. Enter Phonetic Symbols (輸入注音符號): With the keyboard in Chinese mode, press the keys to spell out the sound of a character. A complete syllable usually consists of an initial, a medial, and a final, followed by a tone. The symbols will appear correctly ordered in the Zhuyin Composition Bar (注音輸入欄).

  2. Convert to Suggestions (轉換為候選字): Press the Spacebar. The Zhuyin in the composition bar will be converted, and a list of matching Chinese characters will appear in the Candidate Window (候選字窗), each with a number.

  3. Select a Character (選擇字元):

    • Press the Spacebar again or the 1 key on your physical keyboard to select the first character in the list.

    • Press the corresponding number key (2, 3...) for other characters.

    • Click the character you want with your mouse.

After a character is selected, the composition bar will clear, and the keyboard will automatically suggest related phrases.

Phrase Matching (詞語聯想)

    • Neutral Tone: ˙ (key: 7)

  • Language Recognition (語言識別): The speech-to-text engine is configured for specific dialects to improve accuracy.

    • Chinese Mode: Uses language code cmn-Hant-TW for Mandarin (Traditional, Taiwan).

    • English Mode: Uses language code en-US for US English.

Auto Punctuation (自動標點)

The Auto Punct. button helps you end sentences quickly. When activated, it will automatically add a period (. or ) and a space after you finish speaking with the voice typing feature.

Note: if your microphone isn't working, please refer to this article for troubleshooting steps.

Other Tools (其他工具)

  • Text Management (文本管理): Use Undo, Redo, Copy, and Clear All to manage your text efficiently.

  • Navigation (導航): Use the arrow keys, Home, and End for precise cursor control.

  • Emoji Keyboard (表情符號鍵盤): Click the smiley face to access a full emoji panel for adding expressive characters to your text.

Translate Feature (繁體中文及英文翻譯)

The virtual keyboard features a handy Translate button that allows you to swiftly translate your typed text.

How it Works:

  • Bilingual Text Translation: When the Traditional Chinese keyboard is active, clicking the “Translate” button will convert text from Traditional Chinese to English. Conversely, when the English keyboard is active, clicking “Translate” will convert text from English to Traditional Chinese, using Google Translate.

  • Steps:

    1. Type or voice-type any text into the main text area.

    2. Click or tap the Translate button.

    3. If the text area is empty, a temporary message "Type text first!" will appear, and no new tab will open.

    4. If there is text in the text area, a new browser tab will automatically open, redirecting you to Google Translate.

    5. Your typed text will be pre-filled into Google Translate's input field.

    6. Google Translate will automatically detect the source language of your text.

    7. The translation will be displayed in the automatically selected target language (English if Traditional Chinese keyboard was active, Traditional Chinese if English keyboard was active).

Important Note for Mobile Users:

On mobile devices with the Google Translate app, clicking "Translate" might open the installed app instead of the web page, and it may not pre-fill your text. To work around this, click "Copy" first to save your text, then "Translate," and paste it in the app. If you haven't installed the Google Translate app on your mobile phone, the Translate feature of our keyboard will work perfectly on mobile as intended.

Physical Keyboard Synchronization (使用實體電腦鍵盤上的按鍵輸入繁體中文)

This virtual keyboard will synchronize with your physical keyboard using a computer. If you use the Shift or Caps Lock keys on your physical keyboard, the characters on the virtual keyboard will change accordingly. When you press an English letter on your physical keyboard, it will be converted into an Traditional Chinese character when using the Traditional Chinese virtual keyboard.

Responsive Design (鍵盤可在電腦和手機上使用)

This virtual keyboard is designed to adapt to various screen sizes:

  • Desktop: You will see the full keyboard layout with all keys and labels. If your computer or laptop's physical keyboard isn't working, you can search for "Traditional Chinese Zhuyin Keyboard Online by Dozro" using a search engine and use it to type with your mouse or touch.

  • Tablet: The layout will adjust slightly, and some English labels on Traditional Chinese keys might be hidden to save space.

  • Mobile: The layout becomes more compact, and some less-used keys (like Tab, Ctrl, Alt) are hidden to optimize for touch input. The action row and cursor row are also rearranged for better usability on smaller screens.

We hope this guide helps you make the most of your Traditional Chinese (Taiwan)/English Virtual Keyboard!
