How to Use the Keyboard (如何使用键盘)

Typing and Switching Languages (打字与语言切换)

The keyboard interface is straightforward. Your final text appears in the main text area. In Chinese mode, the two bars below it are for Pinyin input and character selection.

• Language Switching (语言切换): To switch between Chinese and English, click the English/拼音 button. The keyboard layout will update instantly.

Typing with Pinyin (使用拼音输入)

Pinyin Input: In Pinyin mode, simply type the letters for a Chinese character's sound (e.g., hao). The keyboard will automatically display a list of matching Chinese characters in the suggestion bar.

1. Phrase Matching: The keyboard is smart! If you type the full Pinyin for a common phrase without spaces (e.g., nihao), the complete phrase (你好) will appear as the first suggestion, allowing you to type much faster.

2. Selecting Characters & Phrases:

   • Click on a character or phrase in the suggestion bar to insert it.

   • Alternatively, press the Spacebar or the number key corresponding to the suggestion (1, 2, 3, etc.) to select it.

After a character is selected, the composition bar and candidate window will clear, ready for the next syllable.

Backspace: Deletes the last character in the text area. If you are typing Pinyin, it will delete the last letter from your Pinyin input first.

Usage Examples (使用范例)

Here are some examples based on the provided dictionary to illustrate how the keyboard works.

1. To type: 你好 (Hello)

   • User types: nihao

   • Result: The phrase 你好 appears as the first suggestion. The user presses Spacebar to select it.

2. To type: 我 (I/me)

   • User types: wo

   • Result: The suggestion bar shows: 1. 我, 2. 卧, 3. 握. The user clicks on 我.

3. To type: 谢谢 (Thank you)

   • User types: xiexie

   • Result: The phrase 谢谢 appears as the first suggestion.

4. To type: 中国 (China)

   • User types: zhongguo

   • Result: The phrase 中国 appears as the first suggestion.

5. To type: 再见 (Goodbye)

Chinese Diacritics, Vowels, and Consonants (中文变音符号/元音/辅音)

The Pinyin method is a phonetic system that uses the standard Latin alphabet (a-z) to represent the sounds of Mandarin Chinese. A key feature of this virtual keyboard is that you do not need to type any special diacritics or tone marks (e.g., ā, á, ǎ, à).

Fast Typing the Common Mandarin Phrases

On an English keyboard, you can access all the above symbols using the AltGr key. However, on the Chinese keyboard, some of these symbols are replaced with the following Mandarin phrases, commonly used in Mainland China.

• 惊: Displays on the AltGr + Z key and types: 不可思议.

• 妙: Displays on the AltGr + X key and types: 莫名其妙.

• 矛: Displays on the AltGr + C key and types: 自相矛盾.

• 情: Displays on the AltGr + V key and types: 一见钟情.

• 废: Displays on the AltGr + B key and types: 半途而废.

• 力: Displays on the AltGr + N key and types: 心有余而力不足.

Voice Typing and Other Tools (语音输入及其他工具)

Voice Typing (语音输入)

Click the Microphone (🎤) button to start voice typing. Your browser may ask for permission to use your microphone; please click "Allow." The status message will show "Listening..." as it converts your speech to text.

• Language Recognition (语言识别): The speech-to-text engine is configured for specific dialects to improve accuracy.

  • Chinese Mode: Uses language code cmn-Hans-CN for Mandarin (Simplified, China).

  • English Mode: Uses language code en-US for US English.

Auto Punctuation (自动标点)

The Auto Punct. button helps you end sentences quickly. When activated, it will automatically add a period (. or 。) and a space after you finish speaking with the voice typing feature.

Fuzzy Pinyin (模糊音)

The Fuzzy button is a powerful feature for users who may not distinguish between similar-sounding initials or finals. When toggled on (it will turn green), the keyboard will treat these pairs as the same, providing suggestions for both. For example:

• s and sh (typing si will also show results for shi)

• z and zh (typing zong will also show results for zhong)

• c and ch (typing cai will also show results for chai)

• Finals like -an and -ang or -in and -ing.

On smaller screens (mobile), the "Fuzzy" button will display a wavy icon (≈) to save space.

Other Tools (其他工具)

• Candidate Pagination (候选字翻页): If there are too many character suggestions to fit in the window, < and > arrows will appear. Click them or use your physical left/right arrow keys to navigate through pages of options.

• English Autocomplete (英文自动完成): If you type a common English word (e.g., "hello") in the Pinyin bar and press space, the keyboard will offer the English word as the first candidate.

• Text Management (文本管理): Use Undo, Redo, Copy, and Clear All to manage your text efficiently.

Translate Feature (简体中文（拼音）和英文键盘)

How it Works:

• Bilingual Text Translation: When the Simplified Chinese keyboard is active, clicking the “Translate” button will convert text from Simplified Chinese to English. Conversely, when the English keyboard is active, clicking “Translate” will convert text from English to Simplified Chinese, using Google Translate.

• Steps:

1. Type or voice-type any text into the main text area.

2. Click or tap the Translate button.

3. If the text area is empty, a temporary message "Type text first!" will appear, and no new tab will open.

4. If there is text in the text area, a new browser tab will automatically open, redirecting you to Google Translate.

5. Your typed text will be pre-filled into Google Translate's input field.

6. Google Translate will automatically detect the source language of your text.

7. The translation will be displayed in the automatically selected target language (English if Simplified Chinese keyboard was active, Simplified Chinese if English keyboard was active).

Important Note for Mobile Users:

On mobile devices with the Google Translate app, clicking "Translate" might open the installed app instead of the web page, and it may not pre-fill your text. To work around this, click "Copy" first to save your text, then "Translate," and paste it in the app. If you haven't installed the Google Translate app on your mobile phone, the Translate feature of our keyboard will work perfectly on mobile as intended.

Physical Keyboard Synchronization (使用物理计算机键盘上的按键输入简体中文)

This virtual keyboard will synchronize with your physical keyboard using a computer. If you use the Shift or Caps Lock keys on your physical keyboard, the characters on the virtual keyboard will change accordingly.
