How to use the Cantonese Virtual Keyboard (Jyutping Phonetic)

Welcome to Cantonese online keyboard by Dozro! This keyboard is designed to help you type Traditional Chinese characters by using their Jyutping (Cantonese Romanization) pronunciation.

1. Typing Characters with Jyutping Phonetics

Unlike alphabetic languages, Cantonese (Chinese characters) requires a phonetic input system followed by character selection. This keyboard uses a QWERTY-based layout for typing Jyutping Romanization.

  • Type Phonetically: Start typing the Jyutping romanization of the Cantonese word you want to input. For example, to type "你好" (hello), you would type nei5 hou2. (Note: Tone numbers 1-6 can be included or omitted; the system will try to suggest based on the phonetic string.)

  • Press Space for Suggestions: After typing a complete Jyutping word or phrase (or part of it), press the Space bar. The keyboard will then send your phonetic input to an AI model to fetch a list of matching Traditional Chinese character suggestions.

  • Select Characters: A panel will appear above the keyboard displaying character suggestions. Click on the desired character or phrase to insert it into the text area.

  • Continuous Typing: After selecting a character, the phonetic buffer will clear, allowing you to immediately type the next word's phonetic input.

  • Press Enter for Suggestions + Newline: Pressing Enter will also trigger suggestions, and upon selection or if no suggestions are chosen, it will insert a newline character (\n).

  • Backspace: When you press Backspace, it will remove the last character from your phonetic input. If the phonetic buffer becomes empty, the suggestion panel will hide.

2. Basic Typing (Latin Characters)

  • Lowercase Letters: Simply click the corresponding letter button.

  • Uppercase Letters: Press the Shift key (left or right) and then click the desired letter. The Shift key will automatically deactivate after one character, unless Caps Lock is active.

  • Continuous Capitalization (Caps Lock): To type continuously in uppercase (for Latin text), press the Caps Lock key. Press it again to turn it off. This will toggle the case for all letter keys.

3. Symbols and Numbers

  • Numbers: Numbers (1-0) are located on the top row and produce standard Western numeric digits.

  • Symbols: Common symbols (e.g., ` , !, @, #, etc.) are available by simple clicks or by holding the Shift key as indicated on the keys. These symbols remain consistent regardless of Shift or Caps Lock state.

4. Special Action Buttons

The top rows of the keyboard include tools for working with your text:

  • Undo: Reverses your last typing action.

  • Redo: Reapplies an action that was undone.

  • Copy: Copies the selected text to your clipboard. If no text is selected, it copies all text in the input area.

  • Delete: Deletes the character immediately before the cursor or removes the currently selected text.

  • Clear All: Erases all text from the input field and clears any active phonetic input.

5. Cursor Movement and Navigation

Dedicated arrow and navigation buttons allow for precise control over your text input:

  • ← (Left Arrow): Moves the cursor one character to the left.

  • → (Right Arrow): Moves the cursor one character to the right.

  • Home: Moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line.

  • End: Moves the cursor to the end of the current line.

  • Important: Moving the cursor using these keys will clear the current phonetic input buffer and hide suggestions, as the context for character suggestions changes.

6. Emoji Panel (😀)

  • Click the 😀 (Emoji) button to open a panel filled with various emojis and symbols.

  • Select the emoji or symbol you wish to insert into your text.

  • To close the panel and return to the main keyboard, click the Keyboard button at the top of the panel or click anywhere outside the panel.

7. Voice Typing (🎤)

  • Click the 🎤 (Microphone) button to toggle voice typing on or off.

  • When active, you will see a "Listening... Please speak now." message above the keyboard. Speak clearly in Cantonese (Hong Kong) for your voice to be converted into Traditional Chinese text.

  • Important: Your browser must support the Web Speech API and have microphone access enabled for this feature to work. If not, a message will indicate the issue. Voice typing usually inputs characters directly, bypassing the Jyutping phonetic step.

  • Voice typing will automatically stop if you press any key on the virtual or physical keyboard or click outside the input field.

8. Physical Keyboard Synchronization

This virtual keyboard will visually synchronize with your physical keyboard for Shift and Caps Lock states. Key presses on your physical keyboard will also be reflected visually on the virtual keyboard. When using your physical keyboard, typing letters will add to the phonetic buffer, and pressing Space or Enter will trigger character suggestions, just like with the virtual keys.

👉️ If your physical keyboard isn't working, if you have physical disabilities, or if you lack a keyboard for a less frequently used language, you can search for "Cantonese Virtual Keyboard Dozro" with a search engine and use it to type with your mouse or touch.
