User Guide: Arabic (Tunisian)/English Virtual Keyboard

Welcome to the free Arabic (Tunisian) Online Keyboard by Dozro! This intuitive on-screen keyboard is designed to help you type seamlessly in both Arabic and English, offering a familiar QWERTY phonetic layout for Arabic and essential typing features. It features voice typing (Speech-to-Text) and emoji symbols. If you're looking to type Arabic (Tunisian) words using an English keyboard or write English words in Arabic, this is the ideal solution for you. This multilingual keyboard also provides translation for typed text between Arabic and English. Experience this Arabic keyboard tailored specifically for Tunisia and its vibrant cities such as Tunis, Sfax, Sousse, and Ettadhamen.

Key Features:

  • Dual-Language Support: Effortlessly switch between a QWERTY phonetic Arabic (Tunisian) layout and a standard English layout.

  • Voice Typing: Speak to type in both Arabic (Tunisian) and English.

  • Emoji & Symbols Panel: A dedicated panel for quick access to a wide range of emojis and common symbols.

  • Text Editing Tools: Undo, Redo, Copy, Clear All, Delete, and Cursor Navigation.

  • Translate Functionality: Instantly open translate with your current text.

  • Auto Punctuation: Automatically adds a period and space after voice input.

  • Responsive Design: Adapts perfectly to desktop, tablet, and mobile screens.

Getting Started:

  1. Text Area (اكتب هنا باللغة العربية... / Type here in English...): This is where your typed or spoken text will appear. Tap on it to ensure it's focused before typing.

  2. Virtual Keyboard: The interactive keyboard below the text area. Simply tap on the keys to input characters.

Keyboard Layouts:

The keyboard dynamically changes its layout and character set based on the selected language:

  • Arabic (Tunisian) Layout:

    • This layout uses a QWERTY phonetic mapping, which means Arabic letters are generally placed on the English keys that produce a similar sound (e.g., 'Q' for 'ق', 'F' for 'ف').

    • Main Arabic Characters: Displayed prominently on each key.

    • English Labels: A smaller English letter or symbol is shown in the bottom-right corner of some keys for reference (e.g., 'Q' on the 'ق' key). These labels are hidden on smaller mobile screens to maximize key size.

    • Diacritics and Special Characters: Many Arabic diacritics (harakat) and less common characters are accessible via the Shift and AltGr keys.

  • English Layout:

    • A standard QWERTY English keyboard layout.

    • All keys will display English letters or symbols.

Special Keys & Functions:

  • Shift (⇧):

    • Arabic Mode: Toggles between primary Arabic characters and secondary characters/diacritics (e.g., 'ض' from 'ق', 'ؤ' from 'و'). Also used to access shifted symbols.

    • English Mode: Toggles between lowercase and uppercase letters, and accesses shifted symbols (e.g., ! from 1).

    • Tapping a character key after activating Shift (and not Caps Lock) will automatically deactivate Shift.

  • Caps Lock (⇪):

    • Arabic Mode: Behaves like a persistent Shift for Arabic letters, allowing continuous input of shifted Arabic characters.

    • English Mode: Toggles persistent uppercase for letters.

    • The Caps Lock key will light up green when active.

  • AltGr (AltGr):

    • Arabic Mode Only: This key provides access to a third set of characters, often used for less common Arabic letters or specific symbols (أ, إ, ة, ى, diacritics like ٰ).

    • The AltGr key will light up green when active.

    • If AltGr is active, and Shift is also active, it may access a fourth set of characters (char_altgr_shift), if defined.

    • Tapping a character key after activating AltGr will automatically deactivate AltGr.

  • Backspace (⌫ or Backspace): Deletes the character or selected text before the cursor.

  • Enter (⏎ or Enter): Inserts a new line.

  • Space: Inserts a space.

  • Tab (Tab): Inserts a tab character (desktop only, hidden on mobile).

  • (Left Arrow): Moves the cursor one position to the left.

  • (Right Arrow): Moves the cursor one position to the right.

  • Home: Moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line.

  • End: Moves the cursor to the end of the current line.

  • Delete: Deletes the character or selected text after the cursor.

Action Buttons:

  • Undo (⟲): Reverts the last action in the text area.

  • Redo (⟳): Reapplies the last undone action.

  • Copy: Copies the selected text to your clipboard. If no text is selected, it copies all text in the text area. A "Copied!" message will briefly appear.

  • Clear All: Clears all text from the text area.

Translate Feature

The virtual keyboard features a handy Translate button that allows you to swiftly translate your typed text.

Tunisian Arabic Keyboard Online with Voice, Text, English Typing and Translation | لوحة مفاتيح عربية تونسية متوفرة عبر الإنترنت مع كتابة صوتية

How it Works:

  • Bilingual Text Translation: When the Arabic (Tunisian) keyboard is active, clicking the “Translate” button will convert text from Arabic to English. Conversely, when the English keyboard is active, clicking “Translate” will convert text from English to Arabic, using Google Translate.

  • Steps:

    1. Type or voice-type any text into the main text area.

    2. Click or tap the Translate button.

    3. If the text area is empty, a temporary message "Type text first!" will appear, and no new tab will open.

    4. If there is text in the text area, a new browser tab will automatically open, redirecting you to Google Translate.

    5. Your typed text will be pre-filled into Google Translate's input field.

    6. Google Translate will automatically detect the source language of your text.

    7. The translation will be displayed in the automatically selected target language (English if Arabic (Tunisian) keyboard was active, Arabic (Tunisian) if English keyboard was active).

Important Note for Mobile Users:

On mobile devices with the Google Translate app, clicking "Translate" might open the app instead of the web page, and it may not pre-fill your text. To work around this, click "Copy" first to save your text, then "Translate," and paste it in the app.

Language Toggle:

The Eng/العربية button is your language switch.

  • Tap this button to instantly toggle between the Arabic (Tunisian) and English keyboard layouts.

  • The button's label will change to reflect the next language you can switch to (e.g., "English" when in Arabic mode, "العربية" when in English mode).

  • The text area's placeholder text and text direction will also update accordingly.

Emoji & Symbols Panel:

  • 😀 (Emoji Toggle): Tap this button to open or close the emoji and symbols panel.

  • Keyboard (Button in Emoji Panel): Tap this to return to the main keyboard layout.

  • Inserting Emojis: Simply tap on any emoji or symbol in the panel to insert it into your text. The panel will automatically close after you select an emoji.

Voice Typing:

  • 🎤 (Voice Toggle): Tap this button to activate or deactivate voice typing.

  • Status Messages: The area below the text box will display status messages like "Listening...", "No speech detected.", or "Microphone access denied."

  • Language:

    • When in Arabic mode, voice typing will attempt to use Tunisian Arabic (ar-TN). If your browser does not fully support ar-TN, it will automatically try to fall back to ar-EG (Egyptian Arabic), then ar-JO (Jordanian Arabic), and finally a general ar (Arabic) to ensure functionality.

    • When in English mode, it will use English (US) (en-US).

  • Microphone Access: The first time you use voice typing, your browser will ask for permission to access your microphone. You must grant this permission for voice typing to work.

  • Stopping Voice Typing: Voice typing will automatically stop after a pause in speech or when you tap the 🎤 button again, or any other key on the keyboard.

  • Note: if your microphone isn't working, please refer to this article for troubleshooting steps.

Auto Punctuation:

  • Auto Punct.: This toggle button (which may show a period icon on mobile) is for voice typing. When active, it will automatically insert a period (.) and a space after a detected pause in your speech during voice typing sessions. Tap it to activate/deactivate. It will light up green when active.

Responsive Design:

The keyboard is designed to be fully responsive:

  • It automatically adjusts its size and key arrangement to fit your screen, whether you're on a desktop, tablet, or mobile phone.

  • Desktop: You will see the full keyboard layout with all keys and labels. If your computer or laptop's physical keyboard isn't working, you can search for "Tunisian Arabic Online Keyboard Dozro" using a search engine and use it to type with your mouse or touch.

  • Some keys (like Tab, Ctrl, Alt) may be hidden on smaller mobile screens to optimize space, and certain key labels may be replaced with icons for clarity.

Tips for Best Use:

  • Focus the Text Area: Always ensure the text area is focused (by tapping on it) before attempting to type or use keyboard functions.

  • Physical Keyboard Sync: The virtual keyboard's modifier states (Shift, Caps Lock, AltGr) will synchronize with your physical keyboard if you use one.

  • Troubleshooting Voice Typing: If voice typing isn't working, check your browser's microphone permissions and ensure you have a stable internet connection. Try switching the keyboard language and then back again to re-initialize the voice recognition.
