How to use the Sanskrit Romanization Virtual Keyboard (IAST)
Welcome to your new Sanskrit Romanization virtual keyboard. This guide will help you quickly learn its features, especially for typing IAST (International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration) characters.
1. Basic Typing and Character Layers
This keyboard provides multiple layers for characters:
Normal (Latin) Layer:
Lowercase: Simply click the corresponding letter button (e.g.,
a
,b
,c
).Uppercase: Press the Shift key (left or right) and then click the desired letter. Shift will automatically deactivate after one character, unless Caps Lock is active.
Diacritic Layer (IAST Characters):
Activating Diacritics: Click the Diacritics toggle key (on the bottom row). When active, this key will turn orange, and many letter keys will display their IAST diacritical forms.
Typing Diacritics: Once "Diacritics" is active, click the letter key to insert its diacritical variant.
Example: With "Diacritics" active, click
a
to getā
,r
to getṛ
,t
to getṭ
,s
to getś
,z
to getṣ
.
Capitalized Diacritics: While "Diacritics" is active, you can also use the Shift key to get capitalized diacritics (e.g.,
Shift + a
with "Diacritics" active will yieldĀ
). Shift will still deactivate after one character.Deactivating Diacritics: Click the Diacritics key again to return to the normal Latin character layer.
Continuous Capitalization (Caps Lock): Press the Caps Lock key to toggle continuous capitalization. When active, all typed Latin letters (in both normal and diacritic modes) will be uppercase. Press it again to turn it off.
2. Symbols and Numbers
Numbers: Numbers (
1-0
) are located on the top row and remain standard numeric digits in all modes.Symbols: Common symbols (e.g.,
`
,!
,@
,#
, etc.) are available by simple clicks or by holding the Shift key as indicated on the keys. These symbols generally do not change when the "Diacritics" mode is active.
3. Special Action Buttons
The top rows of the keyboard include tools for working with your text:
Undo: Cancels your last action.
Redo: Reapplies an undone action.
Copy: Copies the selected text, or all text if nothing is selected.
Delete: Deletes the character before the cursor or the selected text.
Clear All: Erases all text from the input field.

When active, you will see a "Listening... Please speak now." message above the keyboard. Please speak clearly for your voice to be converted into text.
Important Note: Voice typing uses English (
en-US
) and will not directly produce IAST diacritical marks. It will transcribe words phonetically into standard English text (e.g., "Rama" instead of "rāma"). You will need to manually adjust diacritics using the virtual keyboard after voice input. If voice typing is not supported or microphone access is denied, you will see a relevant message.
Voice typing will automatically stop if you press any key on the keyboard or click outside the input field.
7. Common Diacritic Mappings
Here are some common IAST diacritics and their mappings (See Picture).
A diacritics button is given on the keybaord.
8. Physical Keyboard Synchronization
This virtual keyboard will synchronize with your physical keyboard for Shift
and Caps Lock
keys. Other physical key presses will also be reflected visually on the virtual keyboard where a direct character match exists. However, for IAST characters, it's recommended to use the virtual keyboard's "Diacritics" toggle and clicks for precise input, as physical keyboard layouts typically do not directly output these characters without special IME settings.
