How to Add Google AdSense Ads.txt File to Squarespace (New Native Setting Guide)

Section 1: Method 1 — The New Native Squarespace Method (Recommended)

Squarespace has officially launched native ads.txt support directly within site settings, on August 24, 2026. You no longer need to use complicated 301 URL redirects or custom asset file uploads to authorize Google AdSense.

Whether you are connecting Google AdSense to Squarespace for the first time or upgrading from an older workaround method, this step-by-step guide shows you how to implement the built-in ads.txt feature.

Step 1: Get Your AdSense Authorization String

Before configuring Squarespace, you need your unique ads.txt code snippet. Choose the method below that matches your current setup:

  • Method 1 (First-Time Setup via AdSense Sites Tab):

    Log into your Google AdSense dashboard, go to Sites, select your website domain, and click Copy to grab your generated ads.txt code.

  • Method 2 (Using Your AdSense Publisher ID):

    In your Google AdSense dashboard, navigate to Account > Settings > Account Information. Copy your Publisher ID (e.g., pub-1234567890123456). Open a plain text editor and format your line as follows (replace YOUR_PUBLISHER_ID with your actual numeric ID):

    google.com, pub-YOUR_PUBLISHER_ID, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

  • Method 3 (For Upgrading Users):

    If your site already has an active redirect (old file upload method), open a new browser tab, go to [yourdomain.com/ads.txt] (in my case it is https://www.dozro.com/ads.txt), and copy the exact plain text line displayed on your live page.

Step 2: Add Ads.txt directly into Squarespace Settings

Once you have copied your authorization line, insert it natively into your Squarespace site settings:

  1. Log into your Squarespace website dashboard.

  2. Navigate to Settings > Website > ads.txt.

  3. Paste your copied ads.txt code directly into the text area.

  4. Click Save in the top control bar.

Squarespace now serves your ads.txt file directly from your root domain ([yourdomain.com/ads.txt] with zero performance overhead.

Step 3: Remove Old 301 Redirects & File Uploads (Upgrading Users)

If you previously set up ads.txt using the file upload and redirect workaround, you must remove those legacy settings to avoid routing conflicts for search engine crawlers:

  1. Remove the URL Redirect:

    Go to Settings > Developer Tools > URL Mappings. Locate the line redirecting /ads.txt to your uploaded asset file, delete that line, and click Save.

  2. Delete the Old File Asset:

    Open any page in edit mode, highlight any text, and click the Link icon in the toolbar. Select File from the gear/dropdown menu, locate your previously uploaded ads.txt file, delete it, and save your page.

Step 4: Verify Your Native Ads.txt File

To confirm your Google AdSense ads.txt authorization is working properly:

  1. Incognito Test: Open a new Incognito window and visit [https://yourdomain.com/ads.txt]. Your authorization code should display as plain text instantly.

  2. Instant AdSense Verification: Log into Google AdSense, go to Sites, select your domain, and click Check for updates. AdSense will scan your root directory immediately and update your status to "Ads.txt found and verified" with a green checkmark.

Learn how to generate and add ads.txt file to Squarespace website domain root directory and solve the Google AdSense errors: Ads txt status not found & Earnings at risk. Follow the effective and secure solution to monetize and run ads on your Squarespace website.

Squarespace users might face challenges when trying to upload the Google Adsense ads.txt file to the root directory since Squarespace does not provide an official procedure for uploading Ads.txt file. This guide will show you how to add ads.txt for Adsense to behave like a successful upload to a Squarespace root directory. By following this effective method, the ads text file for my website was found instantly by Google AdSense.

If you don't upload ads.txt file to Squarespace, the AdSense dashboard displays the warning “Earnings at risk - You need to fix some ads.txt file issues to avoid severe impact to your revenue”.

Step 1: Save AdSense Ads.txt Code

Log in to your AdSense account.

Navigate to Sites, then click on the site displaying the "Not found" ads.txt status.

Click on the “Copy” button to copy the Ads.txt code which includes your publisher ID.

Note: AdSense publisher ID is not confidential/secret. It can be publicly accessed. However, your AdSense customer ID is confidential, and you should not share it publicly.

You need a plain text editor, such as Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac).

Therefore, using the search box inside the computer taskbar, search for “Notepad”, and open it. Paste the AdSense code in the Notepad.

Click “File” then the Save option. Name the text file as you like. I named it as “ads”.

Step 2: Upload the AdSense Ads.txt File to Squarespace

Open your Squarespace site. From the “Main Navigation”, click the plus ➕ symbol and select the “Link” option.

From the URL options, select “File”.

Click the Upload button and select the saved Ads.txt file from your computer. It will be uploaded instantly.

Do not Save it. Just close the pop-up window.

Step 3: Get Actual URL Link of the Uploaded File from Squarespace Server

Using a search engine (Google, Bing), search for “URL tracking tool” and open a free online tool like “Tiny Scan”.

In the given field, enter https://www.yoursite.com/s/filename.txt.

  • Replace "yoursite" with your own website domain. Like I will replace it with “dozro”.

  • Replace "filename" with the name of your uploaded text file. As I had named the ads.txt file as “ads”, therefore I will replace the "filename" with “ads'“.

So, in my case the final URL will become https://www.dozro.com/s/ads.txt as shown in video demo.

After selecting the “Scan” button, it will start scanning the URL. After scan, it will provide you the real URL of the uploaded file, which will be actually served from the Squarespace servers. Just copy it.

In my case, the tool provided me the above URL. Of course, your URL will be different.

Step 4: Prepare Redirection Text for URL Mapping

Modify the below text with your own.

/filename.txt -> [actual-squarespace-server-URL] 301

Replace "filename" with the name of your uploaded text file. As I had named the ads.txt file as “ads”, therefore I will replace the "filename" with “ads'“.

Replace "[actual-squarespace-server-URL]" with the actual URL of the uploaded file, you copied from the tracking tool.

So, in my case, the final prepared URL redirection text looks like this.

/ads.txt -> https://static1.squarespace.com/static/6219238e0278bd045f89ac26/t/66ccb46e85a96a5d4f521061/1724691566374/ads.txt 301

Just copy the text and paste in Squarespace URL mapping.

Step 5: Implement a Redirect in Squarespace URL Mappings

Open your Squarespace website and navigate to “Settings”.

Select the option of Developer Tools.

Open URL Mappings.

Press “Enter” to add a new line.

Paste the copied text in URL Mappings. In my case, I pasted the following text.

/ads.txt -> https://static1.squarespace.com/static/6219238e0278bd045f89ac26/t/66ccb46e85a96a5d4f521061/1724691566374/ads.txt 301

Click the Save button.

Step 6: Request AdSense to Update the Ads.txt File Fast

Access AdSense dashboard and open the same website.

Click the “Check for Updates” option. Google AdSense will attempt to find ads.txt file on your website.
